hello

thinking of getting some new gear together for a small home setup. the main question im asking myself is "get a firewire mixer, or run standad mixer to audio interface?"

what are the benifits of each of these setups. they both seem to work out the same in cost.

also looking for a decent intrument mic

-cheers

Hey dude, I'm probably the last guy you'd wanna ask bout computer based stuff but...

what's your budget? (I only ask so the smart people won't have to :D)

Whudda ya have now?

How many inputs are ya gonna need at once?

And what kind of "instrument" are we talkin? Micin cabs? Acoustic guitar? Drums? Trombone? Flatulant powered Kazoo? :D

Mixer to interface - can't do any more 'mixing' once its recorded.
Firewire - individual tracks to computer, then you can mix.

What are you recording? How many tracks/channels at a time do you want to do?

"audio interface" is really too general of a term here.

They come in many types.

You can track individually with a mixer by using the inserts for the output of the channel to feed a pci, pcmk, or firewire interface with eight or more inputs.

If you have an interface with 8 or more channels of digital to analog conversion you can route back through the mixer from the daw and mix analog having plug in's and outboard capability.
