Help with setup

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey everybody, I got some money coming in and i'm about start my studio. I was wondering could you guys review my setup, or point out any gear that wouldn't be worth picking up. I'm kind of short on cash and don't want to waste any money.

For vocals:

Soundcard: Presonus firepod wit cubase http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Firepod/
preamp: aphex 230 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/230/
mic: Rode nt2a http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/NT2A/

For beats:

Reason 2.5
korg microKontrol http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/microKONTROL/

Plugins:

Antares Tube http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TubeNative/
Bias sound soap http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SoundSoap/

Yeah man, looks good. Quick question though... The firebod comes with preamps all ready, so why grab the "230"? I guess it does have a lot of features that you could use. One thing though... Why the microKontrol? For about the same money (maybe a bit more) you could grab the akai MPD16 (much better pads) and a 49 key midi controller. I personally just think it's better bang for the buck.

One thing you may want to add to your list is Recycle (for reason) so you can take loops and covert them into the .rex file format for the Dr. Rex player in reason. It's pretty damn good stuff.

Keep in mind that if you're going to be producing hiip hop and such, you should probably try to grab a monitoring system that has a sub. I've produced beats for a while now and my biggest beef when I started out was that I couldn't get the low end right.

Ah yes, and one more thing... Keep in mind that Reason 3.0 is out.

I was gonna ask the same thing. You might as well wait and see if you think you really need it after you track with the Firepod. And that money will go a long way toward a good set of monitors.

This was a mock list for a future studio that I managed to share my input on. I copied and pasted it from an excel sheet, which explains the horrible nature of this post, but if you can sorta depict the items, it might help you with some ideas.

Thats scary to think anyone would want or try and build that studio. Looks like some kid just copied and pasted a bunch of crap form all sorts of places for fun. I put together a list that was considerably nicer than that and cost quite a bit less for a client of mine. There is a lot of mismatched and redundant gear in that list.

What the hell would you do with ten of the same microphone?

it would go well with his 10 pop filters

I also just noticed that he only has a 4 input wall panel. How will you run 10 mics?

So to take this back to the question at hand. I think the previous post is a testament to show that more expensive is not always better... Good luck with your studio pusha, and let us know if we can help.

;) Nice job guys

You misunderstood the post. A mock set up is just for that, it's a planning phase. The actual setup runs alot more than that.

Redudant, maybe; uncommon, not at all. It was an example to share. Anyway, not important.

Whats the goal with the studio?
