B. Sabbath,
Thank you for the kind words. Glad to hear another person who thinks my $200 was well spent on the drum CD's!
kjmcpo,
I recorded the vocals with a Studio Projects C1, directly into
my Fostex VF08 using its onboard preamps. I never go directly into the computer because its fan is just way too noisy and the mic picks it up. I did about 5 takes on the whole song with her about 2-3 feet back from the mic, then did a few with her right next to it. I wound up scrapping the close-up ones; they just didn't sound right for the song. Then I transferred each take using the S/PDIF connection into my Audiophile 2496 and put it all into Sonar as a separate track for each vocal. Since my sister-in-law was only in town for a few days, I knew I wouldn't have another chance to record the vocals, so I wanted to make sure I got the best of all the takes.
Next I went through and listened to each phrase and took the best take of each phrase and pasted it into a separate track, so I could get a whole song's worth of "best takes." I used some compression in Sonar to even out the volumes of the different phrases, since some takes were a bit louder than others.
The back-up vocals were basically the same, except she recorded two different backing tracks, and I recorded 2 more of myself after she left. The backing vocals have 4 separate parts, 2 of her and 2 of me.
Piano was from my Roland JV-1010, and the guitar is my Mexican Fender strat using the guitar amp simulation in Sonar (I wasn't thrilled with the sound, though, so I have since bought
a Behringer V-Amp2). Bass guitar is an inexpensive DeArmond Pilot 5-string bass.
Well, you asked for a "bit of detail"; hope I wasn't too overwhelming! Thanks for listening.
