Ya ! We finally got some new nearfeild monitors that we are trying! We were useing Monitor 1's and now the veil has been lifted! We are trying Paradigm's Reference 20's {650.00 a pair} Nice speakers..Biampable/passive{We have some nice amps for them}..They are audiophile speakers but they really do seem like they will do the job..I'll have to see how they translate for me..Anyways they have smaller and less expensive speaks too..Also they have actives...You should give them a listen if you are in the market for monitors and you want to try something different.Disclaimer.No I do not sell these ..

Oui Henri:]

I don't sell the Yorkvilles either; however, the passive Yorks are pretty good for the $$. Haven't heard their actives but I'll bet they work quite well too.

There are many better than the Yorks and I see prices going down now that Xmas is over.

I wonder if anyone will market a pair of speakers that take the signal and process it digitally to enhance it? Maybe in 2003 these will be?

Maybe they are now?

Yo Cratinus of the Temple of Sound:]

Holy cow! I was just kind of poking around in the future and Alesis beat me to it. But, surely other speaker-makers will jump on the digital bandwagon? I know that Alesis is going has gone through a shut-down or sellout or something; their early monitors were not very good -- I had a pair of them and sold them to a group in Seattle.

Now, as I peer into my crystal Martini glass, do I see 32 bit sound processing coming? Would a higher bit make a new type of CDR? Since any company wants to keep selling gear, better innovations create new markets.

I know there is a standard fix for CD at this time; however, tomorrow is another time.

Looks like fun in the future and better sounds.

32-bit sound is impossible by today's electronics standards-maybe when we start using non-electrical circuitry-straight optics or something else that will require a totally new take on the matter.

i believe the theoretical limit for sound quality with even the best electrically-based circuits is something like 29db, and i believe mr. neve is working on 27 or 28-bit now.

Actually 1 bit sound processing seems to be the future. See

For a short description of DVD-A vs SACD.

Yo MasterHouse:

Thanks for the link; always interesting to read about gear that might be coming.

One thing I always think about is how to get a better "sound" on my work. Maybe the hologram of video might someday be come out as sound -- only the ears will hear the difference and not really see it.

Thanks again,

But isn't that some fancy floating point "technically 32 bit on some levels" kinda 32 bit processing?

Yo Ambi & et. al.:]

I'll bet that someday we will be using "crystals," to record. We can get them now if we can find Superman's Arctic Hideout.

Lex, are you out there?

Back to the original topic! :)

Paradigms are plain great for the money. The mini-monitors at $340 are the best buy on the planet for new speakers, and they hold value for many years. They often sell for over $300 on ebay.
Break em in first, about 40 hours I think. Good stuff, good stuff.

  excuse my newbieness on this topic. What do you mean by 'breaking them in' ?? You mean burning in like a car ?? I heard things like tweeters got softer by age (heard stories about changing NS-10 tweets every now and then)

Y..They are audiophile speakers but

Hop they do well for you, but you should always be wary of the stuff they sell to "audiophiles." Check this out:

The link came from Mercenary Audios links page, btw, which has some great stuff. My favorite was the bucket of salt water in the trunk of your car improving your highs and mids.

Thanks Light..Ya I'm already aware of the audiophile thing;) We have them for a month to check out. They are 6.5 with a tweet....My partner sold highend stuff {thats how we got the amps ,Manley Mono Blocks}so hes very aware of the hype..They are working pretty well so far{I'm tracking right now} But I have to do a mix and see how they trans and how much mud I get..One thing that I noticed is, that if it ain't pretty...it really ain't pretty on these..Still to new though to really be sure..LOL

The Paradigms like a break in period, just leave them playing for a few days. They get better with time on them. These arent your normal audiophoile speakers IMO. They are pretty clear and flat, and SMOOTH. :)

So who's up for a hunt in the Arctic for Lex's lair? I was searching around for something like that yesterday but i kept getting lost.

Paradigms? Which model? I have 2 sets of Paradigm bookshelfs, just regular ones though. i think one set is bottom of the line, and the next one is a step up. They sound decent for music and dvds but the midrange is a bit muddy. Maybe thats the crappy Pioneer reciever?

The monitor Series are a different breed from the bookshelfs.
