New Microphone Purchase HELP NEEDED ASAP

My advice at this stage is not to rush into any purchases. You may even agree with that, but still accidentally rush because that is what 3/4's of people do at the beginning. If I were you, I would expand my base knowledge about the whole set-up of recording...mics, preamps, interfaces, DAWs, etc. before jumping in the water.

Also, another thing is that there is no "perfect" mic for rappers. Everything is relative depending on your voice and how well it meshes with the frequency response/coloring of the microphone!

This is possibly the best advice on this thread.

Everyone on this forum has their own favourite mics. The EV brigade have already made recommendations--I don't personally like the RE20 or similar for most voices but that's just me and my taste in how things sound. I have my own favourite mics but I don't know what your voice sounds like--or what you WANT it to sound like on your recordings.

You don't list where you are but if you're in or near a city of any size, you'll likely find there are pro audio rental places that will let you try mics for five or ten dollars a day. Or you might find a specialist shop that will let you try mics. Or maybe you can just find some other hobbyists with mics you can audition.

But, if you can find a way to do it, it really is worth trying to have a listen to some actual mics rather than taking advice from strangers like me!

and i bet the mic still works fine! :p

Did you ever pick up a 320 MS? How did it go?

Danger stranger, Danger stranger :D

Yes what Bob is saying here is very true. Find your nearest Guitar center and try every microphone that they have on display that is within your budget and let the best microphone win.
Just don't mistake the loudest response microphone as the one microphone best suited for your voice.

If your field is Rap you may find that a simple Shure 58 is the best one for ya ~ Just don't cup the end of the microphone as you see many do ~ It just turns a cardioid microphone into an Omni microphone then all bets are OFF!

I got one! The bass drum switch is a handy little function to have. It kinda makes it into an Audix d6, and it's nice not really having to fine-tune the placement of it (for live stuff at least :D). It works great on everything else as well!

Okay you all lost me now LOL. Sorry. Yeah well ive read into stuff and I have a better knowledge than what I went in with thanks guys. I, just thinking to go XLR save up a bit. And yeah ill have to look into all these models but when I did a search couldnt discover any within my budegt

Well I have a unique rap voice but basically I'm wanting a mic that sounds profesional and industry standard. The shure sm58 ive looked up and although it seems in my budget range it looks identical to the samson q7 microphone i already own?

EV N/D767a Dynamic Microphone - is this a good XLR Mic? Anyone used it ? any feedback..I cant find anywhere on eBay in the UK an RE-20 used at my budget

Hi guys had a search and struggling to find alot of the equipment you are mentioning as Im UK Based and the shipping costs are phenomal.

Is the RE11 a good mic? Let me know. Im also struggling to find UK interfaces

Nothing around the price of an sm58 will give you a "professional and industry standard" sound (I wish it did :D). A 58 wouldn't be a bad starting point though! I'd get one of those, use the heck out of it for a year or so (meanwhile saving up for the next step), and then buy a new better mic when you are sure that you still want to continue.

At your price range, you should be aiming for more "bang for the buck" and less for "industry standard." Make sense? :)

Looks aren't everything!!

Dang good microphone!!!!!

Yeah true. Isnt the samson q7 just the same as the 58?

Nope
a few initial differences

Q7 has a super cartoid polar pattern
SM58 is Cartoid
this means they will "hear" and reject sounds slightly differently

Q7 Frequency response 80hz - 12 khz
SM58 frequency response 50 -15 khz
This means the SM 58 will record a slightly broader spectrum of sound

A few other things:
impedance is slightly different between the mics, the Q7 has fractionally hotter (Louder) output than the SM58, both mics have a slightly different frequency response curves with a bump at slightly different spots

none of these things inherently make one mic better than the other, just different

There is also no industry standard in mics. Some great songs were recorded on a $7000 vintage Neuman U87, others were recorded on an $80 SM57. Some people love SM7s others can't make them sound good at all
Just like there is no industry standard food, rather you have to balance what you like to taste versus what you can afford to eat

Also no matter what mic you buy whether it be a $50 knock off or a $15,000 super rare vintage, your recordings will still sound like you. Some mics may suit your voice better than others, some may be more detailed, some may have a little more air, some have more self noise than others and a million other things but no mic in the world will make you sound better than you are or sound like (insert favorite artist here). Only your performance, the correct positioning and working of the mic and the sound of the space you are recording in will make it sound more or less "pro" when you record yourself. You could record the sound of a donkey braying through the worlds greatest mic (assuming anyone could agree what that is) and it would still sound harsh, grating, very annoying and in no way musical.

Find a mic you like and can afford and then learn to work the hell out of it to get every ounce of your performance down onto the recorded track

Hmm
After reading around, ebaying and reading more. I'm really stuck on which mic to go for. And whats more frustrating is that all the links given are for UK based companies. But I really can't decide wether to go for XLR or USB..I was going to go for XLR..but now due tp the fact the mics are so many im confused by it and being pushed back to USB but I would like a nice professional recording sound..or something that equates to it sounds like being recorded in a studio!
Im just still stuck between XLR v USB

After much thought im thinking of going with SM58 but struggling to find a interface for my price range in UK in eBay. Anyone recommend any? And whats putting me off the SM58 is I havent heard much feedback for rappers on it

If you're looking for anything NEAR studio quality, forget about usb. XLR is definitely the right path!

Re-11 is a nice mic.
I'm not sure how I'd describe it beside an re-20.

I could whip them both out tomorrow and test.

UK is a nightmare, but keep your eyes open. I got my re11 for like £30, and my re20 for £80.

MD-421 is very similar to re20 for voice work IMO. You can have one of those for £150 quite easily.

Yeah I cant seem to find those anywahere but the ev d767a ive managed to find for £50 but its got 24 hours left on it..dont know if you'd think thats suitable but apparently its the same as the sm58 basically. And someone above promoted it well saying its good.

My friend said he uses a sontronics stc 2 but I cant find out anywhere if its USB or XLR.
And thanks for that I'm definetely going to go XLR then. I can't find a reasonable priced interface for ceport though it sucks its all only USA! Grr
