Really cool sound on the snare (at least on my cheap headphones). Nice instrumentation as well. I always like your guitar sound and this song didn't disapoint. I heard a little pop at about 3:45. Not sure if it was a drumstick or punchin or what. Could be just a bad download too.

Another great production and "thick" sound.

killer guitar sound, how did you get it? (Besides playing it well )

Sam,
Get your tail out from between your legs!!!!!

This tune is excellent!
Its like Sam is hitting his Sgt. Pepper stage.

The mix is tradenmark samij with the usual blend of sounds.
A couple observations.

1. The piano opening lines are great. You managed to get a clean, bright piano sound and also take it to the edge with the low notes. Its almost too good.

2. Love the speaking parts! Right after both of them you have a real subdued patch that is playing a simple mariachi line before the distorted thing breaks in. I was looking for this to be around 20 seconds longer with a nice searing guitar solo as this mode is a killer metal trademark. (I hope that made sense)

3. The Snare.
It is a great sound! maybe all it would take is replacing it in parts with another tone.

Every tune you post I ask about Bass. This one has plenty of low end so I won't whine about it this time :p

My opinion is it takes musical maturity and balls to venture into areas you aren't comfortable with. With each tune you are breaking into new areas and trying new things. Kinda like fishing, you never catch ANYTHING unless you are out there (?)

Whether people here like this tune or not the bar went up another notch and the creative mojo meter also hits a new high!

Great Job!

Joel

I wanted to add that I realized today with this mix how much your singing has improved. I hear more and more confidence with each song!

I dug it from the first beat, great vibe!
Man the guitars sound Huge!

You just get better and better Sam,the best production work Iv'e heard from you yet I think.
Everything flows perfectly, really great mix man!

The Hip Hop was cool,(I dig a good Hip Hop!):D

Very fine stuff, thanks for sharing it!

Happy Holidays,
Pete

participant should STFU

Damn... after more listens, gotta agree.... the improvement has been gradual, but noticeable. Riches to rags, for example... nowhere near the clarity and definition as "Winter Came Early". You know... we get so jaded and used-to the creativity... it's almost a knee-jerk reaction we have sometimes, in an attempt to be constructive. You can't just do that in auto-pilot.

you know what.... just realized I've got S.T.F.U. disease :o I should have STFU, because I was wrong about this track of yours, Sam.

It doesn't sound all that "digital"... in a quest to be constructive, I've talked out my ass and should STFU until I'm thinkin clearly again :) (you should see the BS laid down in SLuiCe's thread... Something about thinking a Fender amp was a Marshall  ) (Gotta start listening to everyone's stuff on the monitors again... )

The modal chord change is terrific, actually. It breathes life into the song... gives it more than 2-dimensions. Can't take your creativity for granted, and dammit... that probably happened here.

Gotta wonder just how many tunes any of us would be inspired to write, staring down into all those toilets all day long... like our man Sam :( He don't post no turds, either :)

Chin up, man... you're the backbone of this place :)

muze raises a good point. It has been fascinating to watch your progression as a recordist. The technical aspects of your recordings have really just continued to get better and better.
On this...the piano against that synth part.....that's pretty impressive to manage to get the piano sound that good with a loud-ass synth part going on.
And your vocals are the place where you've grown the most. You've definitely become a confident singer and it comes across in the presentation.
This is a majorly cool tune, can't wait to hear what you do next.

I would agree... the quality of your mixes keeps getting better... this one's pretty decent, though I would echo the comments aboot the snare, and the fact that the cymbals are too low... Also,.. that synth sound is just killing me.. But I guess it's no wonder... I really can't stand this genre of music.. :p (which is why I usually don't comment on your stuff.. :p) Mix-wise, though.. this is pretty darn good... fairly intricate... lot's of change-ups... not boring or monotonous. And hey... if you get rid of that synth, I might even start to like it... :D ;) :p

the guitar was tuned to C#.. the harmonics at the beginning and end were played through a Boss PS-5 pitch shifter pedal into a Pod Pro, and then into a Blue Max compressor.. The main heavy rhythms were doubled.. One track with a J-Station, and the other track with a Sansamp Tri A.C. They were both run through a Blue Max compressor, and a BBE Sonic Maximizer.. I usually always use the BBE for rhythms and bass.. In this case, synth bass.. I'm always experimenting with guitar sounds, and almost every song has a different method..

I really appreciate all the feedback guys.. If any improvement is shown, it is directly because of the help I have received from YOU!

thanks for the inspiring (and often humorous) comments! :)

stay critical! :D

Great song! The erie Korn guitars meet the awsome tone of Layne Staley's harmonies. This rocks. The only thing that was a "bit" lacking in my opinion is the drums but they are still a way better than anything I can do so....... :D

I dont listen to that kind of stuff much, but I`m listening with a different ear than before I started coming to HR. That was recorded very very well, its got phat, its deep, with a lot of heavy heavy swatches of color on the canvas with that instrument mix.
Your a damned good picker..

My wife walks into the room as I am listening to this and asks "is that Ozzy??" so you really have got that Ozzy vocal thing down. Being a guitarist, I am always knocked out by the sound you get out of your axe, others wish they could record it that good!! First rate as always. Like I have said in the past, you dont mess with too many styles because you have a definate vision of what you want out of your music and it shows. Keep em coming!!!

Nice singing as usual. The snare bothered me a bit at first but it sortof fits. It's when it does the dap dap-dap, with no dynamics between the hits, sounds a bit cheezy.

Interesting changes in the song, the hip-hoppish/rappish stuff I don't relate to very well since I detest that style of music :)

But, it does work in context with the rest of the tune which is cool.
Could hear a bass sound better this time, could use more attack. Drums are outfront, which is nice but almost a little out of 'space/context' with the other instruments, maybe drop the snare level a bit and give it some verb.

Good tune!

Very creative!!!

Lots of elements.. Sounds like you did a lot of work arranging!!

Your voice goes very ozzy for a couple of lines in there:D

Cool stuff, good mix, Needs pumped a little.. a little multiband comp might help you out.

Very, very creative.

Keep it coming:D

I must say I am very impressed with this song.

I'm very new to the whole recording thing but I can tell that this one needs a little work...but don't all our recordings...lol

BUt the thing that impresses me most is the songwriting....this song is really good. Why is there crap like Godsmack out there when there are really cool songs like this in the underground??

I loved the use of dynamics....really makes the 4+ minute song sound like an adventure or a journey rather than a short jam.

It kind of reminds me of Alice In Chains meets Faith No More. Really nice work...I like it alot!!!

One of the suggestions I would give you is to put some kind of big accents on the drums when the heavy guitar enter again or some kind of big drum fill in that spot. Also I would try to tweak the drum/snare samples with some EQ' and slight reverb for a bigger heavier sound to complement the rest of the "heavy parts".

Just somethings I'm hearing that's all....I'm not really that experienced to be honest..but I really like what you have so far!!!

congested!!!

GRRRR....right now I keep getting a congested message on my mp3 player listening to the tune...and its very upsetting because the beginning is grabbing my full attention...very Kornish start...and i dig that!!!! I think it sounds awesome...i'll be attempting to play it every few minutes here...it must be that so many people are trying to listen to this sucka!!! and rightfully so!!!

got it going

Dude....this kicks ASS!!!!
Sabbath man...I'm going to have to start making a music folder just for your stuff!!
I mean damn...I won't hesitate to put this on a nice mix cd of rockin' tunes!!!!
