Hey, I'm new here, first post and all. I'm looking for advice and constructive criticism on a song I've been working on. The levels are a bit off (beginning is too soft, making the middle/ending too loud), I just haven't been able to get back into protools to fix it. Lyrics haven't been recorded yet, as I want to get the music down first.

But, let me know what you guys think, I'd love some advice. I'm glad I found this site, been looking for something like this for a while.

Thanks guys,
Chris

Sounded fine to me. I think it's ready for vocals.

Not sure, but it might be calling for some percussion.

Cool, thank you. The lyrics are down and ready, when I play it and sing, it sounds fine (to me), but when I get behind the mic I freeze up a little. I need to get over that. I suppose no one ever likes their voice, right? Either way, I need to work on my vocals before I lay them down. Writing the song was the easy part! Ha!

And I totally agree, I'd love some percussion, but I don't know any drummers and midi drums just sound like shit with the version of pro tools I have. I've been looking for musicians in my area, not very successfully.

Thank you again!

I just added the lyrics to the Song Writing & Composition section, if it gives you guys a better feel. Let me know.
Thanks,
Chris

Maybe I misunderstood, but I downloaded from the link in your first post, but I got the "no words" version again. It kind of sounded like you put up a version with words.

Sorry, yea I meant that I posted the lyrics in the other section, you can follow along and figure out the sections pretty easy. Lyrics haven't been recorded yet. Sorry for not clarifying that!

Not a lot to critique here as it's just a piano instrumental. Post again when you have added more to it.

All I plan to add to it is vocals. Any thoughts on what could be added to improve? I wanted to keep it more basic so the piano and lyrics drive it without getting bogged down by a ton of other sounds. But, I'm totally willing to try some suggestions. That's why I'm here! Thanks.

This is purely subjective, but I've recorded and mixed a ton of piano, so here goes. If it's only going to be piano and vox, the piano might be a bit bright. When I'm using piano in a full mix, I make it bright so it cuts through the mix. But when the piano is the only instrument, I go with something a bit darker. A darker piano sound will feel fuller and richer (listen to Adele--when it's just her and the piano, the piano is fairly dark), while a brighter piano will begin to feel strident on it's own. Just something to think about...

I agree with that! I'm using Pro Tools. Any suggestions? An effect or just different midi piano all together?
Thanks!
