Go join the Yahoo group (URL above). Read the FAQ, read the message archive. Don't post any "dumb" questions until you've read and understood the vast amount of information that has already been covered. At this point, all you need to do is to indicate your general, non-binding, interests via the polls. Once things begin to firm up, then specific instructions will be forthcoming. They will be posted there, not here. In fact, this thread will likely fade away completely by then.

Man I can't believe how busy I am. I guess we are looking for a cut-off date. The longer we wait, (within reason), the more will jump aboard. This company is developing a new type of ribbon mic. I would really like to include some in my order. I should have more info by Tuesday and I will post. I think Michael is doing an outstanding job on his end. I have a friend who is the Manley tech (they only have one) and he says that these mics can moded very economically just by changing a few parts turning them into a high caliber ribbon mic Several people on my end of this "buy" want the mods done. There are simple things that we can DIY too. As I mentioned, the last buy, I got 2 of each mic. I got 2, so I will have one here in the studio, and loan one out to be demo'd. I haven't taken their orders yet, but will soon. Out of the HRM-8,10, and 14, I can't say which I like best, because like I said before, they all exibit the typical ribbon warmth and smoothness, but each different ribbon has it's own charactor. For example the HRM-10 sounds killer on guitar cab. I tried the same mic on a mandolin, and it was acceptable too, but when I tried the double ribbon (14) on the mandolin, there was no second guessing, the 14 was it. All that tinkleing mandolin sound was captured beautifully.
Before I get out of here, it still blows my mind what we are getting for the money. When I demo them, and I tell the studio owner the price, they all say whats the catch, are they hot ?
Some have wondered why I don't add some $ for myself. Well, I make an OK living here in my studio, but have gain'd so many friends, and so much knowlege sharing ideas for mods etc, dealing with China etc., and hey you can't put a price on that and plus, I love a challange. I am working on a tube circuit design and will share more as I progress

I'm very interested in a few mics.
I registered, but that Yahoo group thing is all kinds of confusing.

Hopefully when the time comes to submit our orders we'll get a cut-and-dry email of how to do so.

group buys are cool.
:D

I just signed up for the group buy and awaiting approval.

If anyone is still sending the catalog via email my email is: qballshalls2002@yahoo.com

Hope to buy a couple mics as an alternative to my really clean at4040.

thanks alot guys

Vendor Requests Removal of Pricing Info and Cessation of Group Buy

Looks like the re-branders are not exactly free-speech advocates...

The organizers of the Great Mic Import group buy received the email message below from the vendor this morning.
Per his request I have removed general pricing from the FAQ on the Yahoo! goups site and removed pricing documents from the files section.

This is the only information I have.

Of course discussion about this development is welcome, sorry to be
the bearer of bad news - Michael

Dear Chance and Mickel,

How are you!

Today I get a information from internet, which you organize
microphone group buy on internet, please see the document as attached
document. (Group buy FAQ was attached - mj)

We are greatly appreciated your interest in our microphone products,
but we do not accept this kind of business way from internet, also
please do not put the the price list which I quote for you on
internet, this is a private information between us, so please delete
the information from the internet and stop this kind of business way
immediately, because it has deeply hurt our other customer's benefit,
such as Nady, Apex etc. Otherwise we are afraid that we would not
accept your any order in the future, also the inquiry will be refused.

We are very sorry if it cause you any inconvenience, but I sincerely
hope you can understand our situation. If you have any other better
advice, please let me know freely.

Best regards.

(vendor name removed)

Yeah I saw this on the Yahoo Group.

Hmm, I am concerned about this part of the message:

but we do not accept this kind of business way from internet

Does that mean he does not want the grop buy's business?
Or was he jus illuding to the fact that he does not want any business to be seen on the internet?

We're trying to have the vendor clarify this and be very specific about the types of business relationships they will entertain.

Nady is ticked

Did anyone else see Nady's rant in EQ magazine? Page 15, "The chinese connection connects". Nady is ticked at our efforts. And they say low cost ribbons we now all have access to were their idea/design. And actually this letter from nady is in response to a March '06 artical. I don't know if I have the March isse here or not...

if the design is not patented

or is public domain

i'd s'pose

it would all depend

on what contractual arrangement

nady has with alctron

if nady owns the rights

to the design

or it is proprietary in the contract

then alctron shouldn't be selling

to other vendors

without a kickback to nady

which shold be spelled out in the contract

if alctron owns the rights

then they can sell to

whomever

i'd guess the design is pretty generic

and the chinese can just make it cheaply

Well looks like no good deed goes unpunished. :)

Frankly if the shorter lead time, broader availability, and customer service that Nady, Apex, and the others provide isn't worth their markup then the problem would seem to be with their business.

Similarly if there really is a design dispute then they should take it up with Actron.

One thing that is particularly clear is that it doesn't take much to get set up in the microphone importing business.

If they are Nady's designs  , then Nady could try to enforce their agreement with the manufacturer, but the Chinese aren't particularly receptive to those kinds of arguments from foreign companies.

However, Nady could possibly pursue a US importer for interference with their contract with the manufacturer--in US courts. I haven't read Nady's recent responses in the press, so I don't know if they have contemplated any such action.

Be careful out there, folks :(

That is not the case. Nady is simply leveraging their business volume to intimidate Alctron into refusing the group buy order. It has nothing to do with rights, it has only to do with money. Alctron stands to make a lot more from Nady - in the long run - than they do from the group buy. So if Nady objects, it really doesn't matter whether or not his reasons are legitimate. It's bad business on Nady's part, and might even be considered restraint of trade, but I don't think anyone is going to take him to court over it.

One thing that's clear, though, is that it WILL cost Nady a great deal of good will. There are about 300 people who have just crossed him off their vendor list. So this action certainly isn't going to earn him any additional business.

Agreed....but closer to 500 now! :D

Signed up at the Yahoo group, but waiting approval of the group owner.

cheers! george c :)

This Thread May be Deleted Soon

The Chinese microphone vendor has written to the owner of this forum (Cc: Chance and me) requesting this thread be deleted. I do not know if that will happen so this is just a heads up.

At this point is seems highly unlikley that a group buy will take place with this vendor.

However, the conversation around group buys in general has taken several interesting turns at the Great Mic Import group site. That site will remain active(minus all vendor catalog information etc) as a discussion forum for ideas around group buys.

Ditto what Michael said BUT they will honor manufacturing these mics to OUR specs. which will be different from the brand name mics. The cost won't differ that much. and will be better mics. I have already contacted component manufacturers, and they are eager to work with us. I can't post too much because big brother is watching.

it's hard to get things deleted around here, i'd lock it as a first step.

i don't think added info is the problem

it's the stuff already here

at least it would scroll off the board
