I had better start eating nothing but bologna and generic Mac and Cheese now to save some cash....

I just posted in PSW. Later I will post in rec.org and 3db's forums.
The more we order, the cheaper it will be for shipping

I still have not received any kind of confirmation email or anything like they said would be sent out (along with the .pdf of the catalog), although I have been able to log into the group. Perhaps it's god's way of saying, "nah, you don't need another frickin' mic" or something?

I heard that Yahoo has a virus problem effecting their Email system, which might be slowing things down :

A NEW YAHOO EMAIL VIRUS PROBLEM

As seen on Foxnews, there is a new virus out there that is affecting Yahoo
mail users. If you use Yahoo mail, and have an email titled "New Graphic
Site", do not open it. Just delete the message please. If you open that
email, you will get a virus called "yamanner" which will begin to email
anyone on your address book copies of itself, and greatly slow your
machine down.

For anyone who would like to read the article, the link is below.

Thank you for your time.

If you can log on to the site, you should be already subscribed, as ONLY members can log on, read msg, etc.

If NOT, email me with your email addy, and I'll set you up manually.

If you can log on, go to the file section and you will see the catalog, etc.

GOOD LUCK! :D

I also Just Joined the Yahoo Group and will be in for at least one Mic maybe more once I know the Prices.....

anybody else like really excited? i feel like its the last day of school (wow ironic) even though we wont be getting the mics until like next year ;) damn, why is china so far away...

i'l take 2 ribbons with General TSO chikin on the side :D

Oh and no dogs please

I got the Catalogue but It doesn"t have any Prices....

How and when will we know what Prices the Mics will be because it is the Price for me that will determine what mics and how many mics I will order....

Right now I am thinking about a Pair of Matched Pencil condensers and a Tube condenser and Maybe a Ribbon all depending on the Price....

Cheers :)

This is probably a good time and place to reiterate the deal about pricing. Exact pricing will not be published on the web in order to keep business relationships between the manufacturer and its large international customers smooth.

What will happen is a group buy "request for quotation" will be submitted to the manufacturer. They will respond with pricing based on the number of microphones we specify in the request for quote.

But that's sort of a chicken and egg situation for many people. I can say this. If folks join the Great Microphone Import group and take a look at the excel docs in the "Files" area they will see limited pricing for some products. If you compare those products and prices to similar products offered by national retail chains you can calculate a good rule of thumb "direct-buy discount" that can be applied to other products in the catalog.

Beyond pricing, potential buyers might research the performance of some of these products. For example, The Tape Op archives (search "TOMB ribbon mic") and other forums are filled with information about the 2" "long geometry" ribbon mic that is one of the products available to the group.

The multi-pattern tube mic offered in the catalog has been discussed up and down the 'net for a couple of years under its various re-badged names. The forum threads documenting last year's controversy around this mic make for really entertaining reading. Research will reveal what people think about it in its stock form and what some people do to modify it into a mic that gives the big boys a run for their money.

A group buy such as this can be a great deal - if potential buyers are willing to do some research and become informed. But the organizers are not going to provide easy-to-read exact pricing or a cookbook about how to turn a Chinese mutlitpattern tube mic into C12 clone.

I was notified yesterday that the manufacturer is developing a new type of ribbon mic. I am waiting for an up date as for availability. I sent this info to Michael for posting

yeah, I thouht that was a little vague on the manufacturer's part and would raise questions we couldn't answer just yet so I didn't post that portion of your message.

<snip>

Sadly, this whole pricing model that is being used is not going to work for me. Call me an arse or whatever, but I cannot commit to list (on a poll or otherwise) what I may or may not want to purchase without knowing what the ballpark price is going to be. I mean, heck, I'd like to have 5 Gefell 930's, but there's no way I can pay for them, and I know that because I can see how much they will cost me before I make any commitments to anyone about purchasing them. I don't believe that seeing the price of a drum kit mic pack is going to help me figure out the price, for example, of one of the ribbon mics, but that just may be me. I'm just a "normal guy" without a multi-million dollar studio-backed budget to be able to afford and blindly commit to purchasing an item (music-related or otherwise) without knowing how much it costs ...and yes, I know that I'm probably not "committing" to a price by merely listing it on the poll, but since overall pricing will be based on this list, in a way, there is a subtle implied expectation for me (and everyone else) to purchase what they have listed on the poll to get the pricing that the company grants based on the poll results.

Simply stated; I cannot comfortably list what I want to buy without seeing the prices first, as I may not be able to afford much of what I would be listing.

...Not to mention that the only method of payment (apparently) is PayPal, which as a network and computer security professional as my real job, I have learned to avoid like the plague.

If any of what I have stated is not true, which is very possible as I make many mistakes throughout any given day, please correct me.

Thanks!
