Sadly, this whole pricing model that is being used is not going to work for me. Call me an arse or whatever, but I cannot commit to list (on a poll or otherwise)
Simply stated; I cannot comfortably list what I want to buy without seeing the prices first, as I may not be able to afford much of what I would be listing.

...Not to mention that the only method of payment (apparently) is PayPal, which as a network and computer security professional as my real job, I have learned to avoid like the plague.

I don't think any of us will have a problem with you or your ideas. *I* don't think you are an 'arse'.... :D

We are NOT forcing anyone to participate, and as off now, we have almost 170 folks 'onboard', lots more than I figured at this stage.

I run a small Ebay Store, and use PayPal daily, which is just about a necessity to me, as I'm disabled, and it permits me to operate and do things I wouldn't be able to do otherwise. I've been using it for almost a decade. Is it perfect, NO WAY, is it a damn good tool, HELL YES!
I wouldn't have much of my Studio Gear without PayPal, or Ebay...
guess, I consider them necessary evils, sort of like 'Women'! :p
(yeah...I have several wives [been married, 4 times, so far!])

I agree with Moon, but I think further discussion should occur at the Yahoo site, where I will post my comments.

If there were some ballpark prices listed and I could use my credit card, I would be "in like flynn", whatever that means... :)

Oh, Here's what it means (link).

Even ballpark pricing like that listed a range of #'s purchased and what the cost would be, would be very helpful.

For example:

1. Example Mic A
Numbers ordered*****Approx Prices
1-50 total..................~$50
51-75........................~$38.59

...and so on. Then I could get an idea of what I'd be looking at and see if I could work it into my budget. I can easily afford 3 mics at $50.00 each, but not 3 mics at $200.00 each, so knowing the ballpark prices would allow me to more accurately list what I would want and be able to afford.

The PayPal thing still would kill the deal for me though. I have some friends who swear by it, as they sell a lot on eBay, but I know one or two folks who have had awful experiences with it. However, if I could pay by Credit Card into a PayPal account set up for the deal, I would be willing to do that, as I would just like to stear clear of having to set up my own personal account with PayPal.

...Heck, I already get too many "your PayPal account has been illegally accessed" phishing emails as it is!! :D

I agree, and both messages were posted to the Yahoo site moments after they were posted here, but there's a bit of lag time when posting there, so it takes a while for them to show up. I will no longer discuss the topic here at all, since it has begun generating discussion there now.

First homerecording.com Ribbon Group Buyers - Ribbon Mic opinions?

First homerecording.com ribbon mic buyers - can you comment on the sound of the mics you bought? Likes, dislikes, sounds like, sound good on..., sounds bad on... etc.

A number of visitors to the Great Microphone Import group, Tape Op message board and other places are intrigued by the group buy concept but find there is very little info to help them differentiate these mics from one another except body / headbasket styles.

Any ribbon mic opinions?

The last buy, I got 5 different ribbons. While they all exibit the typical ribbon charactoristics, they are all of different flavors. I couldn't believe the high gain ( for a ribbon ), the HRM-14 double ribbon has. I, as many, were plesently surprised. If we were disappointed, we wouldn't be doing it again

bump

I'd love to hear more reviews if they're available. They look so purty I'm going to buy 4 or 5 regardless, but it would be nice to hear from people who have a few.

And thanks so much to Chance and Michael for putting this together, I'm sure it'll be quite a headache at some points but we all appreciate it!

I'd like to have a couple of ribbons and multi-pattern tube condensors. I'd be very interested in hearing what anyone has to say about any of the mics from the last group buy. In the mean time, I'm digging around for what I can find. If anyone has links to discussions about these mics, post them already!

sorry, im interested but i don't follow your explanation (although i do apreciate it)..do you mean the double ribbon is not as gain starved as most ribbons? i'm interested in this mic but dunno if i have the pres to feed it..unless it's not gain starved as most ribbons..could you clarify please?

thanks.

I'd like a pair of 14's, tried to join the group but have not heard back yet. Please advise.

You're listed in the members list, so if you go here

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Great_Microphone_Import/

you should be able to log in and access the group. They're not taking orders yet - just gathering and disseminating info. You can go to "files" to see the products, and "polls" to indicate your interests.

I assume that after a few weeks of this, orders will be taken.

Should be about 6dB hotter, in theory.

FWIW, the output specs for the Nady RSM-2 single ribbon is +/-1 dB of a Shure SM58, and since (I think) these are all manufactured by the same company and have similar levels of output, it probably won't be an issue for you even with the singles, much less the double.

I get a reasonable level of sound out of the single ribbons with my $110 Peavey PV8 mixer, my Firepod, my M-Audio FW1814.... I think the days of pres not typically having enough gain for ribbons is long past.

Cheers,

less gain for more output then is it?

(thanks)

The Great Mic Import group buy status

In case you missed this thread we now have almost 300 members, very good volume of interest shown in the product polls, new FAQ...and who knows, perhaps a visit by the man himself - Chance Pataki!

People are starting to wonder when the ordering close date will be. Lets get the word out a bit more and work toward moving this along.
