Hey all. I have been inactive for quite a while. I recently came upon some free time to play with some of the studio toys I have accumulated over the past few years.

This is a mix I have been working on. It's brutal death metal. It's just slapped together and there are no vocals yet. Let me know what you think.View attachment 64408

The guitars give off a lot of low end when they are muted in the more 'chugging' sections. So maybe cut them around 90hz and below.
I think that way the bass will shine through a bit more, and while death metal is guitar heavy, the punchiness of a real low bass mkes it more 'brutal'.

Overall it sounds real good. I just think that the low end of the guitars is competing with the bass too much in sections and makes it sound a little muddy
from time to time. Also, are the drums recorded or something like EZ Drummer? If they are recorded they sound really well mixed for the genre. If not, they
sound a little mechanical, although that works a bit more with this style.

Thanks for your comments.
I have a set of KRK rockits. Though they are a good budget monitor, I screwed up and got the 5's and they aren't famous for their reproduction of low end. In retrospect, should have gone with the 8's, but what can you do? I rolled off the lows on the guitars as you suggested and I can tell a subtle difference but not much. Could be due to the monitors. The drums are programmed but not EZdrummer. I went with Addictive Drums. They don't sound as human as EZdrummer but offer a lot more sound shaping options and that triggered sound is acceptable given the genre imho. I have always found EZdrummer's version of DFH to be kinda weak.

Nice, the passage at 3:11 is especially brutal, felt like another turn of the screw on the vice in which you put my head.

Have you ever used Reason? The Subtractor synth has some really deadly bass patches. Check out the Thor device as well.

I agree with the above about the guitars, they do duck out the bass at times.

I went thru a drum period where I put a kit together so as to know what it is like to actually play drums. I suck badly at it but it did give me some valuable insight as to just how damn hard they are to play. Not being a metal guy I don’t know if what you’ve programmed here is humanly possible, maybe so, but to me it sounds impossible, the kick I mean.

Interesting composition that my Nephew will dig. His Mustang has the system that tries to remove my spleen every time we ride together.

I really liked the guitar sound. Yeah they are probably a little strong in the low end. But it's an easy fix. What guitar/amp did you use for the rhythm guitars?

I don't care for the machine gun drums. But that's mostly just me. They fit the genre.

Just an ibanez S series through a Digitech rp250 (Awaiting laughter).

The bass and guitar meshing problem has convinced me to order the KRK 10' sub-woofer to compliment the Rockit 5's I already have. Never thought I would need a sub-woofer to monitor the low end recording metal but that's the rockit 5's weak point. Not to discourage anyone from buying them. They are excellent value still.

I happen to like machine gun drums....lol. Nah, I do like a dynamic drummer but for death metal a triggered sound is acceptable. I'm not recording a major label release.

Oh they are :p. I often get that response from people who aren't seasoned in underground metal. Some drummers to look at are Derek Roddy or George Kollias. These guys have insanely fast feet. I have played and have owned a few "real" drum kits, and I agree, The degree of skill required to play this kind of music takes years to perfect. I can't do it either.

Brutal, yeah, I love it!
Sounds great! I would prefer less bottom and more head on the snare but otherwise, it's brutal enough to iron out the wrinkles in your scrotum....!:D
Any vocals planned?

Yes, this is a pretty good song and do not ruin it with the type of vocals that are nothing but screams. Let Joey put something cool to it. Seriously. That is the only thing that has turned me away from this type of music.

If Joey has any ideas for this tune then I would be more than happy to let him. Joey?

It's about bed time for me, which means I have to watch my bad habit of doing a harsh post just before sleep.

The thing is that this is all pretty generic. Very well done but generic all the same.

Why not start with the vocal melody/lyrics and THEN do the generic AROUND that?

The answer is obvious... the killer vocal is the hard part.

Where the sliiiimmme live!!! Haha, man this is great. A little too much chug riffing for my taste but that's just an opinion about the song. I prefer a chug riff once in awhile so that it has more impact. I'm listening to your remixed version and actually think the bass is a tad loud. The guitars were recorded dark and the bass is kinda bright so it sticks out enough already. You did a good job programming those drums. The hi hat choke at 1:47 sounds especially realistic. Death vocals are an aquired taste but part of death metal's sound. This needs death vocals. You're good at guitar.

listening back I agree with you. I like a clicky bass but it's overriding the punch of the guitars. An Easy fix though. thanx.

This is deadly. One of the better metal jobs i have heard in the cave not withstanding joey's shit. He's set a bar all of his own.

This is noteworthy stuff. Everything is coming in clear and its great.

I kinda like the snare though in mix one though.
