So AT has a new mic - the 2020. It looks a lot like a 4040, but it's supposedly going to retail for under $100. Didn't get to hear it, but if it lives up to the AT reputation it could be interesting.

No frequency response plot, no shockmount, no pad, no rolloff. Audio technica are not very straight forward with their quoted frequency responses - the plot often tells a different story to the quoted figure. 20Hz-20kHz coulde be measured +-20dB. I reckon you'd be much better off with a used 3035 with shockmount - I picked up my pair for $80 and $110(with cable).

Here's the frequency plot.
The capsule is electret, doesn't give a size. The mic is 6 inches long and 2 inches in diameter - mic manufacturers put little 1/2 inch diaphragms in big side address mic bodies and people think they're buying a LDC. Looks like this is more of the same dishonest BS - though doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad mic.

Buy one and let us know.

they must have done the math and figured how much money mxl and studio projects are making in the sub $100 market.

i'd agree that if it lives up to the audio-technica rep that it will be something to consider.

Yes, it does: 16mm, a little over 1/2".
Yup. I didn't see it there under the mic picture. Actually, a tad over 5/8" (a tad in this case being about 1/32". :))

Also, I see it can't be used outside here in the Phoenix area in the summertime - ambient temperature must be under 110 degrees F.

Yep, it's compulsory at school and a lot of people still speak it though not exclusively

Cool, where did you find that? It doesn't look too bad at all. Audio technica use the same capsules in a lot of their mics I wouldn't be surprised if this is the same capsule used in the MB4k.

Hmmm... a noisy MDC electret without a shock mount.

I own a bunch of AT mics, but think I will pass on this one.

It seems several of AT's "LDC's" are electrets, the 4033 and 3035 coming to mind. They are not forthcoming about the size of the diaphragms either (which is why it surprised me to see the 2020's listed), and it would not surprise me either if these used the same or very similar capsule as the 2020.

Exaclty what I was thinking when I saw it, and if that's the case, then the 2020 could be a very handy little mic, especially for under $100!

20 db noise? That's...really high.

Well the 4033 and the 3060 are both rated at 17 db...so I don't understand why you think 20 db for a sub $100 mic is high...no one seems to be complaining about the 4033, and the complaints about the 3060 aren't about the self noise.

You guys are a bunch of negative ninnies. I'm personally going to wait for a review and hopefully try it before I come to a conclusion. Audio Technica is a dependible company and I doubt they would make a piece of crap mic.

What complaints? The 3060 is an extremely groovy microphone.

I was refering to the fact that some people don't think it sounds "tubey" enough. Of course I wouldn't expect it to with that teeny-tiny itsy-bitsy hearing aid tube in there, but it is advertized as a "tube mic."

Also, just for the purpose of comparison, so you guys don't think I'm talking out of my ass, here are the noise levels for some similarly priced mics:

MXL V67 - 20 dB
MXL 2001 - 17 dB
CAD GXL2200 - 20 dB
Nady SCM1000 - 26db!

Samson and Behringer do not list noise for their mics. I have a feeling it's over 20 dB. What I'm saying is that you cannot discount a mic just because it has a self noise of 20dB; as you can see - one of the boards favorites, the MXL v67 has 20dB's of noise, and I haven't heard any complaints.

I like both my 4033 and my 3035. I don't think I've ever been called a negative ninnie. Not sure how to respond,

I've never checked it out precisely, but I bet that's because the harmonics are a little higher than the second that maybe people expect. It definitely does not sound like a solid state condenser, there's some distortion goin' on, it might not be the U47 type (not that I would know), but it has a very definite personality. It's high-mid warm and bright where maybe people expect smooth.

Well...other than the V67, I wouldn't call any of those good mics. Actually, I'd go ahead and call them BAD mics, having had pretty poor experiences with all of them. When I was thinking of ~100 dollar mics, I was thinking of the SP B1 (12 db) the M-Audio Nova (14 db) and the CAD M177 (10 db), which I currently think the world of...

Of course, the 4033 (at 17 db) is a great mic...so...yeah, you make a good point.

I guess we just gotta wait for how it sounds, eh?
