Just starting out again for the third time in 17 years.

Can someone recommend a two channel 1/3 octave graphic EQ for mastering that won't break the bank.

I've looked at a lot on the web, but I can't decide because there are just so many to choose from.

In the $300 price range is what I'm looking for.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Do you really want to run your entire production through a $300 graphic EQ?

Software plugins would probably do the best job for the lowest price. The Speck EQ's at www.mercenary.com are the cheapest of the high end EQ's.

What are you planning to do with it? That type of equipment is mostly used for live events, rather than recording. As Tex said, you can do much better with software.

Plus, if you're recording digitally, why would want to go back to analog for EQ?

I guess I should have said that I am working in analog. At least for the foreseeable future.

This would only be used if needed. I don't plan on fixing it if it ain't broke.

This is for my own use. I don't work for the The Record Plant, Rumbo Recorders, etc.

Common mastering EQs are:
- GML 8200 (George Massenburg Labs)
- Avalon 2055
- Manley Massive Passive
- Weiss EQ-1 (digital EQ)

All are well into the over-2K price range.......

There would be ABSOLUTELY NO POINT in trying to "master" with a $300 graphic EQ......... you will do far more harm to your sound than good.........!

You're better off worrying about getting your tracking and mixing done right, then the "mastering" will take care of itself - unless you plan on releasing your material (in which case, you won't get much out of DIY - you should be sending it to a mastering house)......

Thank you for your informative answer and your advice.

I never used one before for mastering, but I thought I might be able to tweak the mix ever so much better with one in the rack.

I think I will use the cash in other areas so that an EQ will not be required.

I really had no idea that a decent EQ ran into that kind of cash. I mean, it's nothing to drop that kind of money on a good mic, but a lowly EQ? Wow.

Thanks again.
