I have a quick question. I ordered my computer with no sound card inside,
because I want to get a professional audio card with a breakout box for
recording to hard disk and cd-r. My main concern is whether this digital
interface will also function the way a normal sound card does: icon alarms,
the playing of a CD, hearing boot-up and shut-down sounds, hearing MP3s and sound on MPEGs, etc. I'm sure you have the answer. I appreciate your time.
I hope I haven't made a mistake by not ordering a sound card.

No problem. In your control panel, all you need to do is set your sound card as your prefered audio device. If it is your only sound card, it may do that automatically. Channels 1 & 2 are usually the default for most cards with multi outputs. One thing that most PRO audio cards do not have is a sound table for internal MIDI. Do some research before you buy your card.
Good Luck!
