Hey
I'm looking to purchase a new laptop so i can record on the go. What laptop do you recommend? I guess it doesn't matter as long as it's fast and has a big hard drive....i know i need a good interface to record (i'm thinking M-audio Delta 1010)..can i connect that to any laptop, let's say a dell?
thanks in advance

You can't connect Delta 1010. It has a rackmount box for inputs and outputs (8 balanced jacks) which connects to a PCI-card. The PCI-card also has SPDIF in/out. A laptop has no PCI-slot.

The Delta 1010 won't work because it requires a PCI host card that comes with the unit itself; i think you're mistaken by looking at the breakout box only. For a laptop, i would highly recommend getting a Firewire interface.

how about the MAudio Firewire Solo Audio Interface...can that connect to a dell laptop? i dont know much about computers..how difficult will it be to buy the interface and install it myself into a laptop

The firewire solo has one connection, a firewire cable, just plug it into the firwire port in the laptop and install the drivers and your done.

on the same note, I just want to know what the point of a midi interface box is (I have a Turtle Beach Midi to USB cable). I know that a midi interface can send signal to multiple devices, but what use would it have if you just have 2 devices sending information to one another? Also if there is a difference, why is one better than the other?

I bought a 3.2 Ghz laptop and an MBox w/ Protools LE and it works just fine.

Mbox provides only 2 simultaneous tracks (you can only record two things at a time, but you can run drums through a mixer and use only one line), so if your a singer songwriter, you can go on vacation with your acoustic and bring along the laptop and mbox (easy to lug around), then you can plug in, turn on and record right when you get an idea.

The only thing you need to remember with laptop recording: it needs to be fast, because desktops at the same speed will handle it better than a laptop with the same specs. you will also need 1gb of ram because my 512 isnt cutting it.

also, another mistake i made (the biggest of all): im using a pc

if you have enough money get a powerbook g4 (not the new g5 if you want protools le, its not supported yet). it will run the mbox with more plugins than if you had a windows computer.

hope this helps.

what about the soundcard in my laptop...does it matter if it's intergrated?

I don't know if I agree with that statement. My 2.2ghz AMD HP Laptop runs M-Powered Protools without any problems whatsoever.

Much cheaper than mac too.
