hi everyone,
here is it ... everytime i've been in studio to record i always have been disapointed ... so i decided to record myself !! and biuld my 'kind' of home studio ...
i'm a blues player , kind of mississippi electrified blues but with some 60s/70s influences ...

here's modern stuff i like :

www.myspace.com/theblackkeys
www.myspace.com/aabondy
www.myspace.com/juniorkimbrough

and for sure any kind of john lee hooker, chess , stax, atlantic stuff ...

here what i have :
mac + pro tools
the t bone mics + shure sm 58
m audio fast track ultra 8r (sound card)
esi near 5 (monitoring)
fostex R8 (tape recorder)

my goal would be to have a 8 track recorder , to record my band : guitar/harp/drums

i'd like to know what i need more and what i need first ??? console, preamp, ??
i tell again that i like the 'old sound' , which for me is more 'warm' 'sing to my ear' don't know how to say it ...

really hope you can take sometime and help a beginner ...
thanx !!

Hey man you've posted here before with the exact same question like 3 other times. I think you got some pretty good suggestions on how to get this warm sound your looking for as well as some good tips on how to use your equipment. If your still not getting what your looking for than maybe the problem is talent not equipment. That being said you hooked me in again....

I think your looking for a garage sound not a warm and clear sound. The Black Keys I think recorded their first few albums in Pat Carney's basement with limited mics and tracks. So.. get a green bullet for the harp a 57 for the gtr amp and back everything off. Don't do much close miking. Think Lo-Fi! I don't gear is your problem at this point.

sorry ... for me it's not exactly the same question ... just want to know what i need 'first' ...
sorry for the inconvenience but thanx anyway !
i did my 1st recording, need to mix now ... i tried a lot of different places for mics and best was far from the amp ... i'll try to give a listen if you want to tell me what you think about ...

Do you want the single best advice you'll ever get anywhere?

The only way to get good at something, is to do it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Try stuff, see how it sounds, take notes, and do it again. Don't dwell on your first recording: get it done, mix it the best you can, and then record again using the knowledge you gained the first time. Asking what to do first is like asking what a specific microphone sounds like when micing a specific instrument. No matter what answer you get, it won't help you with your specific situation anywhere near as much as just doing it and seeing what happens!
