Need help on making a studio

Alright, so ive decided to go to school for music. Im in my first semester or college taking a few recording classes n such. Anways since i am learning and being taught right now i decided this would be a good time to start making a studio and just continually build on to it. However im not exactly sure what i need.

I just finished building my computer for it, getting 12gigs of ram, 1terabyte harddrive at 7200rpm, i7 2600k processor, windows 7. I plan on using Pro tools 9. What i plan on doing is recording guitars, drums, vocals, plus i wanna do remixes of songs n such. Is Pro tools 9 best for this stuff or is there something else i will need. I had planned on getting this setup for a start off of sweetwater. Its the Digidesign 003 factory

Can anyone give me some info on what else i may need to make an actual decent home studio. Right now i have $5,000 to spend but plan on continually adding more and more to make it better. Thanks
 
Personally, if it was me, I would wait on spending that cash for a few more semesters till you get familiar with recording, software, and hardware. There really isn't a DAW that it better than the others (though some may argue that). It all depends on what fits YOU best. What is best for your workflow, your needs and what not. If you're using PT9 at school, it wouldn't hurt to get PT as you will be familiar with it then. The 003 is a great interface and will fit your needs.

Again though, if you can be patient, I would hold off some just till you get into recording a little more at school. You may find that your wants, needs, and what not will change.

Just out of curiosity what are they teaching you at school for recording these days and on what DAW, Computer type, The microphones, interfaces?

Welcome aboard, hypoxik. Interesting name. Play the choking game much?

For sure you'll need to treat whatever space you're going to be working in, so I'd brush up on the DIY bass trap building skills. Start there. Avoid foam, blankets, egg crates, and all that horseshit.

I don't think protools is any better than any other recording software anymore, but it does require you to use proprietary hardware. Fuck that. I use Sonar, but Reaper is free to try, inexpensive to buy, and very well-regarded here.

On the hardware side if I was starting now I'd pick up something from RME like the fireface 800. You'll need a desk to sit at and some monitors. That will eat your 5k easy. Start saving for a nice mic selection. You'll need some preamps, too. Resist the urge to buy "everything you need" up front. Pick up a single piece of quality gear at a time and learn how to use it. That will help you figure out what you need to acquire next.

Caution: you are looking into the black hole of money pits. You have been warned. :D

This is no longer correct. He said he was looking at PT9, which no longer requires proprietary hardware, you can run it with thrid-party interfaces and hardware now. No more LE & M-Powered. It is just Pro Tools 9 and Pro Tools 9 HD. Well, PT9 HD still requires you to have the digidesign DSP cards, but I would assume (especially since he's only got 5K) that he is not getting a HD setup, in which case he will not require proprietary hardware.
 
But I've always hated the business plan of poop tools and now that DAWs like Reaper and others are giving them a BIG run for their money they are opening up free ..... to late they are soon to be left far behind and wondering what went wrong.

Eh, possibly, but I think their reputation of being the industry "standard" will help carry them some (though it's not as true anymore). I think the market is evening out, but I don't think that PT will fall to behind. I could be wrong though I guess. lol.
