It's the 38
That was the only brown one they made.
The 48 was cream colored on the top and bottom with a dark grey center plate where the transport buttons are.
The 58 is also cream colored on the top and bottom and medium grey where the transport buttons are.
The TSR8 was black.
The ATR60-8 was cream colored with a medium grey middle.
And, last;
The 80-8 was dark grey on the bottom, chrome on the top and wood colored side panels.
I hope the seller cant tell you the model number because he simply forgot and not because the flip up head cover has either been busted off or the name plate has been stolen off the head cover.
If the model number plate from the back is missing too, this would tell me that you are dealing with a hot, (as in stolen) machine! The back name plate has the serial number on it. Make sure that has not been de-faced or removed.
It's bad enough that these wonderful old machines sell for pennies on the dollar for legitimate ones. Don't support criminals who would sell you hot ones for the same money.
But, as you say; You know the guy so, everything is probably cool.
Cheers!
