Long time lurker, first time poster here. Let me start off by thanking everyone that posts here on a consistant basis (won't name names, don't wanna leave anyone out). The info & attitudes here are top notch! With the butt-kissing out of the way ;), on with a few questions....

I'm getting ready to upgrade a few of my mics, one of them being the bass drum. I keep reading here about the AT Pro 25 being a decent 'budget' mic for this application. Would this be an 'upgrade', so to speak, over the Shure 57 I'm currently using? Or, do you think I'm better off with the 57 right now, & save until I can buy a d112, Beta 52, or whatever. I guess what I'm really asking is if you only had those 2 to choose from (AT25 & 57) for using on the kick, which one would you use? By the way, I usually record music of the 'heavy' genre.

Also, I was searching the Web & found a place that sells them new for about $40 (cheaper than the 8th Street links I've seen). The specs on them are the same, BUT, the pictures are pretty different. I attached a pic so you could see what I mean. There's no red stripe around them, but more importantly the capsule is different. Is this an older model that I've found? Would you think it sounded basically the same? Sorry for all the questions & thanks in advance......

A lot of people put these things in the same leage as the d112 and a lot of other very expensive mics, so that says a lot.

Thanks chessrock, almost seems like a no-brainer. Any thoughts on the pic?

Sounds kind of suspicious to me. I would try emailing them or calling their 800 number in an effort to find out what the difference is. If you can't get an answer, or can't figure out how to contact them, then you don't need to be doing business with them anyway. Better safe than . . .

Anyway, $60 is just plain ludicrous for a mic that good, so I wouldn't push my luck looking for an even better price - know what I mean?

Stillpost,

that pic looks correct. the bulk pro25 i got from 8th st didn't have the red stripe either. it comes down to customer service.
8th st shipping was cheap and very quick.

good luck

btw, who was selling the mic for 40?

Yup. I got one off of ebay, and it seems the same (physically) but without the stripe. A guy on ebay always sells them for $35 +$8 for shipping. Pretty crappy packing though...

My at pro 25 came last week and i had a similar reaction. where's the red stripe? And the shape of the windscreen is actually a little different on the bulk pac versions. I mail ordered mine from 8th street and happened to by the store not long after and stopped in and asked why it was? He just said that's how the bulk pacs come. It's the same mic and everything, that's part of the reason they can sell it cheaper, along with the bulk quantities without the case and small details like the stripe.

I got some great sounds with it on the kick drum. I was using a sm58 before that and i can honestly say that it is much better. It's got that thud that you can feel in the chest when you crank it. Plus, for $60 in my case, or $40 in your case, there's no way you can go wrong. I actually miced a little guitar cabinet with it during a clean part and it gave an interesting deep sound.

hope this helps,
Brandon

I've been using my Pro 25 for a fair while, and I find it easier to get decent b/d sounds with it than with my mate's AKG D12E!

Buy it, and switch your 57 to snare duties.

Thanks for all of the replies, that 2 different picture thing really had me confused. The place I was talking about was the guy selling them on eBay, if anyone's interested his user ID is hytechgear. I did order one, guess it'll arrive next week sometime. Thanks again......

Say, could someone post a link to one of those $40 AT Pros for me? I gotta' check this out.

I bought 3 of them from 8th. Street, and they look good, are all Metal (someone was claiming that they were Plastic on another board- Harmony Central).

I plugged them in and they sound great.

I'm going to buy several more of them. I plan on adding more toms to my set, so I'm going to buy one of these for each drum.
That's a great Price, and they are good for lots of things.

This guy's always got three or four of 'em for sale. Just remember to serch for "pro25" and the seller is Hytechgear. I `haven't had any problems.

Pete

actually, pro25 won't turn it up. You have to search for "at25"

damn! i just payed $60 for mine at 8thstreet. i also got two behringer ecm8000s.:D

At $36 each, that's a damned hard deal to beat. It would definitely beat the Radio Shack 33-3020 for toms that I've been recommending. I just bought two of the Pro 25s myself, so that makes 3 for the studio.

I have to say, this guy has the fastest shipping for ebay I have seen. I had an email within hours with a ups tracking number. saying that it had already been shipped.
