nearfield monitors - to port or not to port?

So, my man-cave/studio is not a thing of beauty...more like a random collection of the things in my life i like! :D

I'm currently mixing through a pair of cheap-o infinite baffle monitor speakers (5" + 1" soft dome), which don't sound too bad. I've also got a sealed 15" sub for when I need to work on that low tone. But, the monitors are really showing their limitations...across the spectrum.

I figured it's time to spend a little $$ and get a pair of cheap replacement nearfields. Problem is, I can't figure out whether to stay the sealed way (I love a tight fast bass, even if the extension isn't that low - that's what the sub is for I feel), or go for something front-ported like the Wharfie 8.2 pros.

The room's reasonably small, and unfortunately I have to run the monitors close to the wall (6" or so).

Any advice/experience on the merits of bass reflex design vs infinite baffle?

Also, since most of the "professional" monitors in my price range are generally less-than-ideal, i've been toying with the idea of a pair of older audiophile monitors. Anyone out there doing the same?

cheers!
