So I got a couple of the new Naiant X-Q mics, and just had a chance to record a couple tracks with them. The reason I'm posting is for feedback, suggestions (help :) ) with how to position them for a good stereo track. These are small diaphragm omnis, as you may have heard.

Here's the MP3:

I slapped some brand new strings on the old D-28 - not my best playing, I just wanted to belt one out for the test.

What I did was to use two mic stands and position the X-Qs about 18 inches from one another, and 18 inches from the guitar, each angled in at about 25-30 degrees, one straight out from the 3rd fret, pointing at the 7th fret (right channel), and the other straight out from between the bridge and the sound hole, pointing at the 20th fret (end of the fretboard, yes, left channel). I know that since these are omnis, the direction is not so important, but I wanted to be complete in my description. The track was heavy in the left channel, so I panned right by 8 (but it's still a little left heavy)

I *really* like the mics, but I'd sure appreciate any comments you have on how to improve the stereo effect. This is a tracking skilz thing.

Move one to the 12th fret, and the other to the lower bout, and angle them straight or out a little. The are directional at very high frequencies, and you have both of the aimed at pick noise. I also think the placement between the bridge and soundhole is too boomy.

I´m not experienced with the nayants and/or omni mics (then, sorry for the speculation...)

I really like the clean and defined tone of this mic.I already knew from previous recordings here (Tim and Danny Guitar).

As a "not omni guy":D,as I explained, the mic positioned at 3º fret seems surprisyling "not so bright/almost anoying" as some mics sounds at this position (probably high quality instrument helps too...)
Pretty well balanced and still (obviously) bright , but defined on mids, not near the "harshness".Great.

Left mic (placement?) sounds a little heavy in the bass, did you tried the "around" bridge position (with angle?)?I use it a lot, even if I have only one LCD ,is usually my favorite placement.

Maybe it can help with the stereo image. Agreed, it really could be wider IMO.

thanks! I'll move the "left" one closer to the bottom of the guitar.
