judging things with my own ears is not a foreign concept to me -- don't we all do this every day when we're recording, mixing, or just listening to a new album? not to mention when looking for a new piece of gear.
but just because everyone has opinions about said gear, it doesn't mean it's useless to hear them.
i know everyone has their own opinions about these things; i like hearing them. even opinions i will never follow (e.g. because i already know i don't like a certain monitor, mic, etc, or because i know i can't afford whatever someone is recommending) are valuable to me as a part of amassing information. especially if i'm amassing information as part of preparation for travelling around the world looking for the greatest monitors ever for less than $800.
