I have a Powerbook G4 667mhz. I use Digital Performer 3.02 to sequence my songs. Right now I have my sound module (Roland XV 5080) out directly into MOTU 828 (hard disk recording). I record my sequence into DP. I mix my song and then "bounce the file to disk" and export it as a aiff file.

But when I listen to it again in iTunes, my music sounds very flat, 2-Dimensional, and no depth at all. the sound basically sounds "180" instead of "360." Am I missing a step or missing some equipement? Like, should I have my sound module out to a mixer first than into the MOTU 828.

Please Help! Thank you very much!

Also, I monitor the levels before and during recording. But it's so quiet. Compared to professionally recorded songs, it's more than 50% softer. Why is it so much softer? If I increase the levels (when recording), it would start cracking.

Thanks again.

Did you try panning your instruments?

Did you try EQing your song after you saved it?

Go there, they have everything you need to start mixing your song the good way...

As I have always been told:

Read, read and... READ!!!

Yup, I panned my instruments. And I EQed it. It still sounds trapped. Maybe that's a better word for it. Trapped. And it's very soft. thank you for replying. I will check out the website.

Are you recording the entire mix out of your keyboard and into the recorder?

The best way is to record individual tracks and mix in the computer so you have better control.

mixing issues

The flatness I would attribute to an eq problem (possibly). As for the quietness, you need to master this recording. A professional; mastering engineer would use a variety of things (multiband compressor, etc.) but you may have to settle for maximizing the volume in some sort of editing program ( I use Goldwave).

Thank very much for all your help. I will try and post back later.
