so im getting frustrated here...

my biggest irritation with recording guitar is this :

When listening to a lot of decent recordings (not even pro just done well) the guitars sound like they could be right there in the room with you. sounds great! but my guitars always SOUND like ive mic'd up an amp.. if that makes sense to any one..

but yes, my rig im running is just a firepod firewire interface directly to my pc. running cubase sx3. recording with an Audix I-5 off axis but against the grill. I usually do a parametric sweep on the guits to cut out unwanted freqs, making sure not to cut the mids, and then boost in the highs about 3.5k and 7k-ish.

any way, i have a few tracks in the mixing clinic, just do a search for "hell to pay" and you can hear my tracks and see if you can hear where im coming from and any suggestions you might have!

I have that same problem sometimes and with my limited setup I've found that different tones and distortions pick up better than others. It's sad because a good recording should sound exactly like what was previously played live and a lot of the time that just doesnt happen. (that's in my opinion, and assuming the musician gets good tone)
What I do for more tight sounding distortion, like newer stuff...is through the guitar amp boost the highs, record extremely loud and double all guitar tracks then throw them of by just a tiiiiny bit.
For really griddy stuff like Big Muff or 69 Fuzz or Holy Grail, Ill get it to just where I want it to sound live, then use just a bit less distortion. Also, I have a really cheap MXL condenser that I throw a few feet back from the cab. I'm sure a lot of guys are going to say ahhhhh you aint shiiit, shits weak...or something like that, and I'll be the first to admit that I'm probably wrong, that's just my Afro-Engineered way of doing things.

Yea im wondering if its my mic placement along with the amp being too soft and too much gain.. My problem is i dont always have a guitarest around to practice recording guit! Hehe
