I've been reading on recording and mixing for the past year and I finally got to apply my knowledge!

This is the first song I ever kinda REALLY mixed! (Before I just slapped on the good ol' 'VERB!)

"This Is Our Town" - brandonli - We The Kings cover - YouTube

Please help me out my criticizing this! How's the recording/mixing?

I know it's lacking some dB's, my USB mic has been dropped....

All help needed!

Thank you!,
brandonli

Congrats on your first recording.
unfortunately I cannot listen because I'm on my cell phone.
Just thought I'd let you know that the mp3 mix clinic is where you want to post your stuff.
:drunk:

Good effort, I like the Jack Conte style production.
It's hard to get the full picture from a low quality youtube vid and so the only thing I would say is watch the pitch on the vocals.
Otherwise top job!

for a first mix it's great well done mate. nice arrangement. one or two dodgy notes in melody and maybe bring the shakers up a bit but then that may just be my monitoring system. great job keep it up.

I noticed that, but I couldn't use my pitch correction software without making it sound like T-Pain. I didn't know how to make the subtle changes. I tried to fix that during the recording, but I had to monitor straight from my laptop (USB Mics....) and latency forced me to do it by ear. But thanks for that! I'm really looking out for that now!

And another thing!!! How is the EQ? I know for a fact I over did EQ. I didn't use subtle boosts. I boosted until I could hear a difference and that was like atleast 3-4dB. And I did cut out a lot of low end, but I didn't have a bass or anything.

There is a hiss in the right ear that might "go away" if you broaden the pan in the beginning. I only notice it badly when it is just the guitar intro.

I'm not sure about pitch correction - I think you should do a few more vocal takes and keep the keepers.

Both your town, and graduating classes should enjoy this song. It's a very nice ballad, and rather than videoing yourself, you might consider taking a few days around town to film those areas mentioned.... and then just add the music to it. Then, drop it off at the local Chamber of Commerce, Visitor Bureau, and high school student body groups. ... you might have a strong local hit.

I think my USB Mic came with a lot of hiss in the background after I dropped it a couple times. I set it to fade in so that the his eases in, instead of popping up. I couldn't get rid of it in EQ without taking out important frequencies. I just bought an interface and condenser mic, so hopefully that problem is gone.

I appreciate the advice, but this isn't my song. This is my rendition of We The Kings' song. It's actually about their own home town. But thanks to your comment, I hope to one day write a song about where I grew up. Thanks!

I write a lot of local flavored stuff. It's genuine and workcs well with both locals and visitors alike. ... too bad that wasn't yours - I knew it sounded good. :-)

I thought it sounded really good, I like everything about the audio except I'd work on the keyboard part a little more, they sound kinda cheapy synthy cheesy imo.. I'd find a different synth tone, mess with some reverb or something. IDK what it needs, but I think that's the weak link. I like the video layout of the diff. instruments, you singing harmonies with yourself, that's cool man, nice job!
