Hello

I just finished doing my first recording with my band, using my new st audio c-port soundcard. I have absolutely no idea what I am doing, so I was wondering if any of you knowledgable types could take a listen to my stuff, and give me any tips on recording or mixing. I am quite pleased with the recording, but it seems to be a bit lifeless to my ears. Also if anyone could give me any views or tips on the songs themselves, I would be very grateful!!

Thanks

Hey Jon:

Well, you've got a lot of sound here, & it's all fighting for space. It sounds like you didn't do much in the way of eq-ing, panning, compressing, etc. all of which will help to flesh out your sound. But you've got some real good tunes here, & that's the most important thing when you get down to it. They've got good energy, which came through despite some of the mix's shortcomings. The one thing that is always really distracting for me though is when the vocals don't stay a relatively consistent level, so that might be one place to start.

This place

has a lot of great articles on eqing, compression, & pretty much everything related to recording and mixing. Do some experimenting.

But I dig the tunes. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the link there, I will investigate and see if I can get my head around it!!

Thanks very much

I listened to "The Happiest Day..."...

Decent song. Nice energy to it. You had indicated it's a rough demo, but anyway...

A bit of hiss at the begining. Lead vocals get buried. Clipping here and there... and everywhere :D no not quite. A bunch of it in the chorus.

Thanks for that, I couldn't even tell there was clipping in it!! I really should try and pay more attention!!

I like Asphyxiate. TriplM and Groucho both covered everything you need to know for right now. The songs are indeed cool. You just need to learn how to EQ things so that different instruments have their own 'space'. Otherwise it all runs together and you can't differentiate between the instruments. Same with the vocals. That's why you can't clearly hear the vocals. Good bass sound during that short break BTW

Thanks very much fro your help there Lt. Bob, it looks like EQ is my first port of call!!

Cheers

awesome toon... (ASPHYXIATE)

Ah... punk music has finally discovered the joy of Major7 ;) and triple rectifiers

This song kicks major ass, jon... I love it... the mix? I do not love it...

Bass seems to lose ground to the omnipresent guitars... drums are hiding...

The key here is "balance"... a trick I've used to get better balance in my trax is to audition it in MONO... does your multitracker/DAW have a "mono" button on the stereo out buss? If so, try it... you'll be amazed at what this reveals...

BTW that bass is a bit "buzzy"... maybe too much string noise?

I LOVE the arrangement and the changes... (I'm just a loon in love with Maj7ths... shoot me :D)

Bump for jonorigin

For what it's worth I'm 42 and truly hate music like this but,

You guys get your stuff properly recorded, mixed and mastered, and I'll proudly give you 20 bucks for a CD. I liked it but it needs alot of work.

I listened to Happiest Day. Not a bad tune at all but as Groucho pointed out, it feels crowded. The drums just can't seem to peak out of the din and that's what should be driving the tune and along with the bass, glueing the bottom together. It's hard to say what I'd do with it without hearing the raw multitrack but I'm sure I'd be thinking about subtractive EQ and compression to start bringing stuff forward.

Thanks for your kind words and help rusty fingers and track rat! At least I have a starting point to trying to get a decent mix now. I was wondering if I should be doing any eq as I record or just in the mixing stage? We basically record everything in the same room, so I can't listen as I record, but I suppose I can try something and listen back before recording proper.

Thanks very much for your help!

Jon
