OK, Here we go....Please Critique

Hello guys. I have lurked here for a long time. Soaking up your knowledge like a sponge.
Now a few buddies and I are getting our ideas recorded. This first post is to get your feedback on the song, mixing, and mastering.

The link is http://bellsouthpwp.net/b/i/bigdaddy000023

There are 2 songs so far.

This was done on a roland VS 1640 then mastered in Protools.
I'm wondering if I pushed the volume too loud on "You are My Father." Is it distorting in the chorus?
Is it ok to hit 0 db in protools? I was letting it hit the red barely.

Thanks for any help.

Doug

Very nice Doug! You certainly don't need any "advice" from me. Pretty decent mixes. Fine vocal performance. A most excellent God.

Esq1?

Thanks Steven for the kind words.
I notice you mention owning an ESQ1 in your other posts.
I also have an Ensonique ESQ1 I purchased in 1985. Unfortunately I sold my Lorg MS-20 now that they made a virtual version of it! Do you USE the ESQ1? Has your internal battery died also? My battery is dead and I just use it as a keyboard controller now.

Thanks again

Doug

Well, I turn it on every once in a while and just play with it a bit and then let it go back to sleep. I've just now discovered, after all this time, that the thing is a midi controller. I got it to make some noise with a softsynth in Sonar recently. :D No the battery is still plugging away....must have been an Energizer. I have my sounds stored on a Korg D8 in case it dies. Maybe if I can ever actually figure out MIDI, I'll get some good softsynths/sampler stuff...maybe the NI B4..I love a B3 organ sound. The ESQ is a nice little rig for an old boy...but the piano sounds stink. I've got it sitting on an old Kustom 88. The piano sound pretty much stinks on it too unless you're playing Riders on the Storm or Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog. :D

if journey and supertramp birthed a religious child.....

not my style of music

but the mix sounds good.

good job there.

I like the composition. Sounds really bright though. Try and darken it a bit. Bring the vocals/harmonies out more too. I like how wide the mix is. Fills the room up really well. It does sound like it's clipping just a bit at certain places (choruses for example). Definitely bring out the lead vox out more. Are you using a chorus effect on the chorus???? Are you hitting 0dB and getting the clip light on your tracks?? If so...then that's a no no. Unless of course you can't hear it at that point. However, I only hear it on the first chorus...barely. I like it though.
On the other song it sounds like you did the same vocal effect as the first song. Try some other effects....unless of course that's the effect you are for sure going for. Then leave it in that case. Very good mixing though. Props!

.

YEs Benny, I am hitting 0 db and getting the red lights often. I was under the impression it was ok to do that. I thought Protools LE had some "headroom built in." But I think I'm hearing it distort now as I listen more.

The EQ on the final mix did boost the high end so I will bring that down.

I will fix it and repost. I hope you guys check back.

Thanks Bro!!!

You web server said you exceeded you bandwidth.

On another note....

I have a 1680. Those Rolands are nice. How long you had it?
