my collab with pinky

Is it the first song..."untitled" a collaboration with kevin heckeler of the new york boogiemen...just wondering...Im guessing it is since its a collab.

Overall the mix sounds good...perhaps a bit to much lead guitar for my taste...i like to use lead guitar sparingly so when the lead guitar actually comes in it has more of an impact.

overall its a decent job though and the acoustic sounds good.
 
i really dig the picked up cut-timeish groove in the middle. as well as the strange rhythm in th beginning on the accoustic. cool mix. :): cool tune.:)

kevin sent me the acoustic guitar track and i built everything else around that. originally i was going to lay vox for it but my vision overpowered my ability, so i left it instrumental. so that's why there's so much lead. i didn't really know what else to do. i find that it's a fault with me--i feel a need to fill up all the space all the time. i'm trying to break that habit, but i become aware of it after the fact instead of actively trying to break it as i'm recording. damn! :o:D
 
Its hard to edit your own lead guitar riffs sometimes...I have a little trick I use...I sing to the song and try to extract some sort of melody line from the vocals and adapt it to guitar...It usually means playing less notes however its a good tip/trick to use when writing lead riffs.
 
lol! that's exactly what i did, except normally i would fill in the non-vocal parts with lead guitar, so the lead guitar ended up doing double duty!!! :D

ya, i do that sometimes, too. if i ever need the lead to be quicker, though, i just arpeggiate the main melodic notes. :)

I guess my tip isnt much of a trick if everone already knows about it...:cool:

Perhaps more rhythm lead could be cool in this song as well...im going to listen to it again and take a closer listen to it.

Did you think about playing acoustic lead guitar riffs on this...just wondering.

truth be told, i haven't done any acoustic miking in this new space of mine, and i've been kinda avoiding it for whatever reason. i've pretty much focused on drum miking since i started setting up my current studio.

plus, i taught myself guitar on the electric and it's bad enough already--my acoustic playing is even worse! :p
 
When i first heard the acoustic in this track my first thought was that it would sound really good with acoustic riffs as well.

made me go to you tube and listen to a few America tunes...I think you could get some good acoustic ideas from these guys...I love the acoustic stuff they do...i also think the bass guitar sounds excellent in this stuff...Im not comparing you to these guys however listening to their music can probably give you some cool ideas for the song you guys wrote...maybe add some maracas or something...lol

Here's a link to my version of the same song. We did these independently, starting only with my base acoustic rhythm track. Only after he was nearly complete did he hear my version, which was finished first (no race). Keep in mind I have no drum kit, so these are canned drums. Josh is a fantastic drummer and his choices really filled some of the voids in my version.



After a few listens I enjoy his lead work. It's almost identical to some of the ideas I had, but ended up going with a more simple 'theme' based part I repeat a few times.

Pretty neat man...intersting how they both turned out. Canned drums don't sound bad at all. This mix seems pretty hot...gives it a different vibe. Cool none the less.

Nice job guys...sounds fun. :D

Very nice full sound on this ...listening on phones everything is panned really good creating a lot of depth...really like the acoustic sound and playing!

I definitely respect America's songwriting and harmonies. But why does it take 3 guitarists to play that song?

My parents were into the 60s, 70s and 80s rock when I was growing up. We had everything from Buffalo Springfield, Cream and the Moody Blues to AC/DC and early Def Leppard playing in our house. I definitely borrow a lot of those styles in the softer music I play today. My harder pop sound is definitely 80s 'metal'/hard rock influenced (Def Leppard, Queensrych, Guns and Roses, Ratt), and my hardest sounds are more recently inspired by Dream Theater, Pantera, and Tool. America probably wouldn't make the list as it tends to be oversimplified rock to my ears. I like a lot of Crosby Stills and Nash, as well as Neil Young's solo material, for their raw simplicity. The Beatles are also another good source, but more for their variety and originality later i ntheir career.

My point is that there's a lot better bands than America I would cite for my major influences, acoustic or otherwise. I don't think there was anything 'wrong' with the acoustic work in this song, it was intended to be rockin' and not merely a pedestrian piece (even the choice in chords are rather original when compared to a lot of folk/ballad rock). I'd say my acoustic style is closest to a cross between John Cougar Vanilla Bean Water Melloncamp and Alex Lifeson.

My $0.02 (and no I'm not biting anyone's head off, just a rant :D )

The acoustic sounds a little distant in the intro - but sounds AT HOME with the rest of the instrumentation.
I can't hear sister golden chair or horse with no mane in this. I can hear a good song though.
 
I only referenced the "America" thing for the acoustic lead parts and really not for the rhythm acoustic this collab has...just saying that there was another way to go with this instead of having lead through the whole song...dont get me wrong its cool to have lead in a song however the riffs lose their impact to the listener if the lead never stops...its basically one long solo...the riffs are good however for me they lose their impact because they never really break up.

Both versions are really cool in different ways, Dross has some killer guitar licks in his version and Pinky has quite a HUGE sound and the narrated part was pretty entertaining. It sure caught me off guard...:p
