This is my friend Geooff's band I am recording a gig demo for.
He built the drums (sans snare) himself.

This is only a mix of the drums with the scratch guitar and bass mixed low (-ish) for context.

I am pretty happy overall with the drum sound.

The kit was fantastic which helped.

This was pre-mixed to a stereo track and then also the kick went to its own 3rd track onto my VS880vX.

GT MD1b tubes for overheads (41 inches spaced based on Recordermans technique)
RE20 on kick
Beyer M69 for snare
SM57 (1) between the rack toms
SM57 on floor tom.


The guitar is a scratch track to be scrapped.
The bass is a DI and RE20 blend and will need to be tweaked a little.

About the recording, I thought the drums sounded a little muddy, not well defined. I think you can get a cleaner recording. I don't record drums live, so I really can't give you many tips. Maybe do some close micing to get more snap. I like the song, it moves along nice. It starts to fall apart after 2:10 or so. Hope this helps, keep up the good work, and post more, I'd like to hear how this song progresses.

Thanks for the input.

All my gear is still "on location" so I had to dump this in with headphones.

Listening back myself on my computer speakers I can hear the kick comes in too hot and need some leveling.
I didnt notice this with the phones.

I'll keep that in mind when listening back on the monitors and be sure to pay attention for muddiness.
