MXL V67g For Me??

Hey everyone, I'm new here, and I'm looking to buy a new microphone for recording mostly vocals and acoustic guitars. Based on countless hours of searching through these forums, I have pretty much decided on the MXL V67g. But before I buy it, I wanted to see if you guys think it would be the best mic for my applications. All I have now is a cheap dynamic mic that I use, so this would be my first decent microphone. I'm not doing professional work, but I'm looking to get the best quality recordings possible. Would it suit my voice well? You can hear a recording of me singing here, at "www . purevolume . com / ryanburke" (sorry, ignore the spaces, I wasn't able to post a URL on my first post). Only listen to "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room", its an old recording and a bad vocal performance, I know, but it will give you an idea of how my voice sounds. And also, I'll be running it through a Lexicon Omega USB interface. It has phantom power, but would I be better off getting a cheap preamp like the ART Tube MP and running it through that or would it not make much of a difference? Thanks so much for the help.
 
In terms of the mic you're thinking of, the best suggestion I can make is to go and find somewhere you can try it out and listen to it on your voice. I know it sounds like a bit of a cop-out but it's quite difficult to say what will definitely suit any vocal without hearing it. Go and have listen to see if you like it.

Things to look out for when you audition the mic: Does it sound smooth in the high frequencies? You might notice that it makes all your "s" "f" and "sh" sounds stick out unnaturally.
How does it respond to "b" and "p" sounds? You might notice that the mic pops a lot at these sounds, not necessarily a problem but you will need to adapt your technique from the one you have on the dynamic mic. i.e. you need to be further away and pronounce your b's and p's over the top of the mic if it still pops (or use a windshield)
Do you like the tone of your voice on it?

Plenty of stuff to think about, perhaps someone else on this forum with experience using the mic will be able to share their experience/opinion? You will almost certainly learn most from hearing it yourself though.

For the mic preamp, I really wouldn't bother, it won't make much noticeable difference really. The Lexicon is a decent enough interface so I'd save the money personally!
 
The V67G is a perfectly good entry level condenser, as good as anything out there in that price range. Will it make you sound good (to you)? No man can answer that question. Will you get better sound by jacking an Art tube MP into a Lexicon Omega? I seriously doubt it. You might get better sound with an M-Audio DMP-3, which, IMHO, is the cheapest mic preamp on the planet that doesn't totally suck. I have never heard anything good come out of an ART tube MP, and in any event, I don't think it is a fundamentally different preamp than the ones in the Lexicon. That's just my opinion-Your mileage may vary.-Richie
 
Well what I was going to suggest Richard had pretty much covered it all.
Go ahead and purchase the V67g tons of people have one and you rarely see them up for sale so you know even if people are up grading they keep the 67 in their mic locker for future projects.

There is a used one right now here at HR in the free music add forum. Check that one out for purchasing!! ;)
 
Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the help. I can't really try the microphones out because none of the music stores around me have good selections of microphones, especially in my price range. So I think I'll just give the V67g a go. I really haven't read any bad reviews on it. And I'll pass on the preamp then. Maybe when I have a bigger budget and am out of school I'll get a nice preamp.

Buy on the internet at a vendor that has an easy return policy.

Then you can try it out for a week or two and if you dont like it send it back.

Some store used to let you try out several at a time and send back the ones you didnt like.

Just be careful of outrageous restocking fees.
 
The V67G will be a good match for your voice. Go ahead and get it; you won't be disappointed.
