MXL 770 Producing A Horrible Screeching Sound

On high gain, for cheapish gear, that's sounds pretty normal to me. Could you post a file of you talking, singing or playing guitar with a lower gain? Maybe a couple set at a quarter, half, etc.

I'm not hearing a bad 'screech' like the OP leads us to believe, more background noise. I have an MXL990 and on high gain it is a noisy little shit, regardless of the preamp I use. Low gain, close mic'ing, I can get some sweet recordings out of it with little to no background noise.

Do you have all your equipment running on the same power outlet?

It's the same with lower gain as well, just quieter. The interface is powered via USB.

Then it could very well be a faulty microphone. Especially if it works for a few seconds then goes into screaming mode.

I didn't realise this is the guy who had an unbalanced XLR cable for a while.
I wonder if Stewart (xaudia) is about? Maybe he could tell us what happens when there's only +48v on one side of a balanced line?

The phantom power supply fixed this, and the mic sounds great! :D

Well I'll be danged.
What was the interface again that was trying to provide the proper phantom.
Only want to know so that we can put it on the future *watch out* list.

He said it was the Tascam US-200 (?) - must be an older model?
My first thought would be that the USB supply is not providing enough current.

Yeah, Tascam US-200. I'll get a new multimeter asap and test. I'm really relieved that finally all of my foolish errors are resolved haha. Cheers for the help guys :)

The interface was second hand as well, so it could've already been damaged by something. I should've bought new, I know, but being on student living money makes it hard to buy new stuff haha.

If you purchased the interface through eBay you are entitled to a full refund.

I like the write up about having to sit on the unit to warm it up. That's being right on top of things. :D

This is what I thought was the problem with my Tascam US-144mkii, but it did the same thing on different computers on different USB ports (all 2.0). A powered USB hub worked, but I had seen a few recommendations to not use an interface on a hub (not sure why).

When I had the problem I had found these....
Is Your Tascam US-144 mkII Noisy? Just Sit on it. « Because I am Here

Powered USB hubs are generally pretty bad for more complex electronics. You can quite easily kill your computer's power supply if you buy a cheap one and aren't careful. I don't bother with them, learnt how bad they can be from experience.

It works now, and I like the interface. I got it really cheap as well, so I don't really want to risk paying more.
