Are there any matched pairs available of the MXL 603? Or is that only possible with more expensive mics?

I understand from this thread that MXL 603's are very useful as overheads, but not on vocals. Are there other small condensers that are useful on overheads as well as on vocals (vocal groups)? How about Shure SM81? Any cheapers ones that also do the trick?

Well,

You know....there ARE no rules but, generallly speaking, most folks dont use smal diaphragms for vox. They just dont do vox well usually. I think you might be able to find out why by asking Harvey or possibly reading the "big thread."

The 603 would be extra nice for things like acoustic gtrs and such. If you are just worried about getting something descent for use with O Heads and vox, there is really no reason not to use large diaphrams as O Heads...in fact, some prefer it.

Thanks re: 603/c1000s. Unfortunatley for me, the 603s are 50% more expensive over here Vs c1000s.

AT 4033.

A stereo pair of oktavas would also be good for group vocals; choral, etc.

I recently tried a 603 on a lead voc that needed to sit a little differently in the mix than my Rode NT-2 was allowing, and was surprised at the results. I'll be using it for that track. Use a pop filter though.

????

That's weird. Where exactly is "over here"? The 603 normally goes for around $75. The c1000s is usually $200, or sometimes you can get 2 for $300.

Either you are getting a great deal on a c1000s, or getting robbed for a 603.

If I were in your shoes, I would save up some money and get SOMETING better than the C1000s.

Are Octavas available where you are at?

'Over here' is Scotland. Our contribution to the world, hmm let me see- Primal Scream, Jesus & Mary Chain, Cocteau Twins, Teenage Fanclub, Shirley Manson (Garbage), err Deacon Blue, Sean Connery, tartan & golf. That's about it really.

Anyway, I looked at the wrong thing-603s is £85 (125usd). The c1000s £100 (150usd) & Oktava mc012 £180 (270usd).

The battery power option of the c1000s appealed to me for some flexibility & I would be using them for other things like acoustic guitar, drum o/h, group vocals etc.
I also have a c2000b & some 57s & 58s.

Whadya say? Go for the 603s?

Definitely,

You seldom see a mic that has such a negative general consensus as the C1000s.

Whisky. Lovely amber liquid of the gods. Mmmm, Islay malts.

And get the 603s.

How could you leave out haggis and bagpipes!!!!

My 603's came in the mail yesterday from 8th Street (man, those guys are prompt), and they better be all that....... or else!

So far, this mic forum has cost me a whopping $350 or so in Chinese mics.......OK, OK, so far batting 1.000. Thanks, Harvey.

V67 - Vocals, hihat, and......omigod - Saxaphone!

ECM-8000's - Drum Overheads. Very happy with them here, but not on acoustic guitar, so I got the 603's

First song. Gonna redo the gtr w/603's.

Wonder if they'll improve my drum overhead sound.
I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

.......Hmmmmmmmm....Shirley Manson....mmmmmmmmmm

Lol. Haggis, whisky (ooh yeah, sooo many to choose from) & bagpipes- amazing what you forget when they're right on your doorstep.
I'll record some bagpipes one day- but I'll have to find a mic that can handle the SPL first! Those suckers are LOUD.

Chessrock, Teenage Fanclub (The Fannies as we like to call them!) have been pretty quiet since their last album but they're still kicking around, putting a smile on the face of anyone who sees them live. IMO they kinda lost it after their second 'proper' album though.

Heylow, women LOVE it. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it :)
