MXL 603 rocks.

Please pardon me. I am just in a state of utter shock over some new drum tracks I just recorded with them. I'm kinda' speachless. These things are just so freakin' cool. The sm57 of small-diaphragm condensers, in my opinion.

I totally agree! I actually used mine the other day. I was recording a water drop sound for a sound effect for a church skit. They we're supposed to be in a cave. It took me forever to get the right kind of water drop, but the mic was amazing!

I think the (not-really-so) freebie that you got, if you mean the 2001 or whatever it's called it's probably best used for a door stop.

Seriously, maybe it's worth a shit, I dunno. I passed on their special offer, and just got 2 603s by themselves. I didn't wanna get stuck with a mic I didn't really like, and since I don't record heaps of live stuff, I saw no reason to start collecting mics of whatever sort "just to have them."

Let us know if you find a succesful use for it - I still won't be buying it, but it'd be cool to know...

Yea, right now I'm just in basic training. Eventually, I will make my way up in the world of plant-dom. My superiors all think I show lots of potential.

My original love was the oktava mc012. I somehow feel like I'm cheating on them when I throw up the 603s. They do have a little different sound to them. The mc012 sounds really open and clear all the time on everything. The 603 is more of a specialist. When I sing in to it, it sounds flat and boxy. Not sure how to describe it.

But then I put them up over a set of drums and wow. Just wow. I'll post a sample soon. I might get extra points that way.

c1000's have a rep for being pretty harsh, whereas the 603s aren't - AND they're quite a bit less expensive.

Scott Dorsey is a pro that has forgotten more about audio than most of us will ever know. He hangs out on RAP and I don't think their is an audio question that ever comes up that he doesn't have the answer to, or at least some input on it. He is one sharp cookie.

RAP is a good place to lurk and learn. You have to be careful there. It is basically a place where real pros swap opinions and advice. You might get eaten alive if you come in there asking stupid questions. After they eat you alive though, they are usually kind enough to send you to a group where you can get your questions answered.

I've posted there a few times, but I try to keep my mouth shut and learn.

I second the recommendation though...lurk....you will learn much. I used to have a bad attitude about that place because I used to think it was full of snobs.

I have since learned that all snobs are not created equal...these guys are pros and some of them are quite nice to just about any type of honest question one might pose....just understand its not the best place to launch the "best condenser under a buck" style threads.

What was this thread about again? Oh yeah...I'd like me a pair O lem ol 603s too, I tell ya whut.

i bought a kit of AKG mics for my drums off ebay because it had everything i wanted. although i'd rather have had something else than the C1000s it came with. I'm thinking i'll sell them and get 603s if i like what chess posts. it'd be great because i paid about 100 for them, can probably fetch 150, and can buy the 603s for 75.
