Like they have everything on computer and they are calling you trying to sell something...If that were happening to me Id be a bit pissed off.
well, my wife's in marketing and that's professional marketing right there.
I respect professionalism whenever I see it.

I've heard nothing but good about Sweetwater and there's a sales rep that calls me a few times a year. He must make notes 'cause he always remembers shit about me and what I do and like. That impresses me as pretty damned professional.
I'll have to buy something from them someday.

I get the same treatment, I haven't even purchased much from them. a couple of years ago I spent over $20,000 on new gear from GC. I had a salesman who was in line to be manager and he always gave me at least 10%-15% off. Well now there is no negotiating anymore there. I cant really afford anymore gear, I dont really need anything except a variety microphones. I want to order from SW soon though. I did have a problem with a brat salesman, I called with a question about an item and the kid says "Are you ever going to buy something"? with a snotty tude. Off the computer screen he new all my history, and I was calling from my blocked private line!

I wonder if they'll keep the warehouse and just cut the jobs and space of the showroom floor?

From the conversation I had with the mgr of the showroom, the warehouse/distribution center stays. The showroom/clearance center is closing Dec. 30.
So after Dec. 30, no more going to the Clearance Center to place a catalog order and being able to drive off with it 45-60 minutes later (depending on how busy the showroom is).

I had a similar problem the first time I ordered from Sweetwater. Because I was a new customer, I had not been assigned an "account engineer" yet when I contacted them because the product I'd ordered threw sparks when I turned it on and the CS person I spoke with had an attitude. I demanded to speak to his supervisor and he hung up on me. I e-mailed Sweetwater's president (this was late at night) about the problem. The next morning the president called me and faxed the return authorization to me at my place of employment.
Not only was there a verbal apology, but when the replacement item was shipped, they gave me a 30% discount off their price--meaning they were willing to take a loss to keep a customer.
My account engineer doesn't call me but he does e-mail me periodically to see if I'm having a GAS attack....

I wonder if we can still go across town and make purchases at the front desk?

Ever go to Guitar Source over on 95th? Granted they don't have as large a selection/inventory as Guitar Center, but they're definitely friendlier people to deal with. I bought my Breedlove there....

I live about a mile south by JCCC...I love the chinese resturaunt next to it...but beware thier service dept...I had a friend who had them work on a PA board for him...and he spotted it being rented out to someone on a gig while he was waiting on it...and I put a strat on layaway once and they lost all the records and sold it to someone else...I got my money back but I was still pissed.

I live in the Northland and boy are we devoid of music shops up here! Antioch Music is entirely geared towards students and beginners, and Bentley Guitar Studios is too small to keep much variety in stock. Although they are the only ones I trust anymore with setups, and the guy that I talk to in there is a Martin collector (but one of the other guys is a total douche that sat and ate a sandwich while ignoring me standing at the counter).

Big Dude's in downtown is pretty good from what I could tell from my single visit, although they have such terrible TV commercials.

I've never ordered from MF but have talked to a few of their reps. As far as Sweetwater is concerned, I've been dealing with them for over a year now and the only time I get a call from them is when they call to check on an order I have placed to see if I got it and if it's the right product. I really like them.

Ive gotten a few terrific deals at the pawnshop on north oak trfwy...but god smited it last year with a tornado...I bought a korg monopoly for $25...and sold it for $800 recently...and my 60's ricky 4001 for $200.

Id like the guitar center by my home mostly...they will compete with dot coms since we have one located here that sells at the front desk...I just hope that doesnt change...MF was a good bargaining chip.

Since MF owns the GC chain, the prices are usually about the same.
Last time I vacationed in Colorado, I visited a store called Musicians Superstore in Westminster. It was twice as big as the GC store 1/2 mile away and locally owned. They did not complain a bit about me spending an hour auditioning different acoustic models and then only buying a strap.
I was actually ready to buy a Taylor 210E but my wife talked me out of it since we still had to drive back home and she did not want the added baggage in the car.
I thought it was a great store though!

That area is different from the showroom though...it at the door on the north side of the building...Ive purchased new stuff right there from the good stock.

I did not know that! Thanks for the information....

How it works out is that MF will match the price of any dot com...and since they are local guitar center will match MF...so I just google the item and find the lowest price and make Guitar center match it.

Although I buy mostly low-end stuff, I've found SW to be the most professional place to deal with, particularly if I want to talk with someone. Often I don't, though, since I spend so much time researching online, and that's when places like MF and 123 can be great. Those kinds of sites throw out those occasional price shockers that can nudge me into buying something I've wanted but firmly resisted. I like that OMG feeling, and it's a good excuse later if anyone asks. I still remember one day seeing the M-Audio SBX sub (always $400 street) at MF for $199. Ordered one before I exhaled. For me, places like SW and MF each serve a purpose.

It seems every store has moments when someone on the sales/service staff does something so egregiously stupid and/or unethical that they create major problems for the business.
I know the dealing I've had with Guitar Source have been good, and I would hope the experiences you and your friend had have since been remedied.
And the restaurant next door is great.
I thought I'd died and gone to heaven the day I bought my Breedlove--a great guitar and great hot and sour soup on the same day! Life doesn't get much better.... lol

I know what you mean--living an hour north of KC, I've seen this community going from having 4 music stores in the 1960s to 3 music stores in the 1980s and 1990s, I moved away in the late 1990s for three years to attend grad school and when I came back there were only two music stores. One closed this year and now there is only one.

I'm surprised Guitar Center hasn't opened a store at Zona Rosa--every other chain store on the planet seems to be opening a shop there....
