Analogue Enthusiast
Hi,

I'm currently working on some simple piano + voice versions of original songs (covers) and thought that perhaps we could do a "virtual" collaboration where each of you adds an instrument and we'll build the song up that way. I'm not too sure how this is usually done but needless to say I'll be working in analog (cassette or reel tape). I pretty much took a liking to recording "live" where I set up an sm-57 mic for voice and one for piano and record in one take. Yes, there's "bleed" but I don't really care or mind. ;) When I will be finished I thought of posting an mp3 file (320 bitrate) for you to d/l and then add your instruments, eq etc ... for your part and we'll layer more instruments on top of this. I then thought that the constant converting of the mp3 might gradually reduce the quality of the song and so might not be a good idea. I'd upload a WAV file but it's just too big a file. Is there a way to do this without sending the actual tape ? Mind you, this isn't a "pro" project, just good home recording fun that can turn into an interesting project. Let me know your thoughts and of course if any of you would be interested. ;)

Great idea Daniel, I hope to get in on your project!

I do some cool projects with my old bandmates who are scattered around the states now. We have gone the mp3 route, but yes, this will certainly compromise quality. We all use Macs and send AIFF files on disc, but wavs work just as good.

A good plan is to make a demo version including vocals and as many instruments as possible, posting an mp3 so we'd get the idea.

Start with the percussion and bass, then add layers of instruments and back-up vocals. Finish up with lead instruments and vocals.

The downside, of course, is that when the digital community gets wind of our project, we'll be chastised for our dichotomy. Shame on us if that stops us, though.

Hey thanks! You seem like a good guy and I feel kinda bad for the other time ... well ... you know ? :(

But it's good to know you're "onboard" with this project and that we can have some good fun doing this! :) Once my part(s) are done I'll post an mp3. (Should take about a week). I'd love to make a wav file, burn it to cd and then mail it out but this might take many weeks for the turn-around so I guess we'll have to use the mp3 format and take the losses as they come, as minimally as possible, of course. I'll try to think up ways, perhaps, to post an entire wav file somewhere and hopefully we'll only deal in the WAV format. Shit, I just came up with a possible idea  ! I'm sure many of you are familiar with mp3 binaries, Agent software and such .. Well, I was thinking of picking out an appropriate, and not too busy binary group and posting a WAV there. Let me know if this would be doable on your and your friends' part, ok ?

Thanks again!

Daniel
