Multitrack recording thru a mixer

I'm sure this problem's been covered somewhere, but I can't find it on the board. I'm recording a number of tracks to my PII/350 system thru a Spirit Folio 12-channel mixer. My card's a DMan 2044 4-in, 4-out. I have tried a number of patching connections, but I find that whenever I go to record the second track, the first track gets re-recorded onto the second track as well. I can't find a set of connections that will let me listen to the playback of the first track without also recording it along with the second track. Can I both monitor and record thru one mixer?

All tips appreciated, folks. Thanks in advance.

I've answered this one a few times but I don't mind doing it again. That mixer should have channel inserts. If so this will work fine. You can patch the four outputs from your soundcard to any four input channels on the mixer. For the sake of this example we'll say channels one thru four. Now take any other four channels (as long as these channels are equiped with either a channel insert or a direct out), say five thru eight and patch from the inserts of those channels to the inputs of your sound card. You need to check your manual on the pin out of the inserts but usually on most mixers you would plug a 1/4" cable only to the first "click". What this does is to "tap off" signal just from that particular channel and send it from the insert which is just after the preamp and before the EQ/fader section of that channel to the individual input on your sound card, thus giving you four discreet inputs. The main left/right output from the mixer just drives your monitoring system so you can hear not only what your doing but what's playing back from the computer withoutfeeding back or crosstalking. Make sense?

Thanks!

Seems to be working, but the monitoring levels are WAY low, even with the output channels of the sound card turned all the way up. I can barely hear the tracks I already recorded, so its hard to add more tracks. The levels going IN to the soundcard seem fine, but anything plugged into the inserts is almost inaudible. If I repatch into a line-level input I get the sound levels back, but then I'm back to my original problem. Any other ideas?

You do have the outputs of the soundcard patched to the line inputs of four channel strips on the the mixer, right?
