Much better mic, not much better recordings

I intend to put the mic through its paces, including on drums. You use the TLM as an overhead?
 
In the video it looks like the mics are behind your body when recording the piano at a distance, and the caps are pointing at the middle of your back. No wonder the takes sound distant and muddy.

You might try mounting the mic a little higher than your head so your body isn't blocking the sound coming from the piano when doing distance micing.

really like it out in front of the kit, but I could see it used as overhead too if the cymbals don't get to be too much. I seen Ronan really likes KSM32 pair as drum overhead, but I haven't tried the 103 that way. To me there's something very natural / punchy about the sound it gets out in front of the kit though.
