Nice! I just heard about these in a thread I started in which I'm looking for some good overhead mics for a drum kit, Metal Band. I can't find the MSH-2 on eBay, where can I get some?

Take Care

The MSH-2 was a very limited production mic, only 8 were made, and none were sold

Its commercial successor is the MSH-1A, have a look for that. Or click the link below ;)

Just wanted to chime in that I used the MSH-1 for overheads (recorderman method) this past weekend and was quite impressed with the results. I'd post a clip, but my drumming is not worthy. :o

I have used the MSH-1's and MSH-2's on a few things and I cant believe how great they sound. But my playing is not worthy as well.

I want to be a migician..........err......musician sooooooo bad.  :D :D :D

I can't believe that I just found out about this mic! They sound really good from what I can tell from the clips!

A couple questions to those who have them and it's creator:

Being that they're omni, would these work in an X/Y setup for drum overheads?

In that drum sample, did he use just the MSH- mics or did he also use a kick mic, etc?

To mshilarious;
Seeing that you test the capsules to match them, would it be a hassle to do a freq chart to see where the mic rolls off at the bottom, etc?

What's the difference in sound between the non-active MSH-1 and the active MSH-1a?

I appreciate anyones comments as I'm very interested in these mics.
They seem to have a very full freq response, I'm very impressed.

Thanks in advance to all.

They are a little directional above 10kHz, so you would get some stereo image. I would recommend at least going with ORTF instead, or trying A-B (spaced pair) or baffled pair (Jecklin disc).

I believe they were part of a regular mic setup.

It doesn't ;) Flat response to 20Hz.

It is a little bit of a hassle to do a frequency chart like you are accustomed to seeing, because I look at each mic with much more accuracy, and I use my monitors and my room, which aren't perfectly flat response. So I test my mics in comparison with commercially available mics with published response curves (Apex 220 and Shure KSM141) in order to derive an implied response curve.

None really, except for loud sources or low input impedance pres. There is nothing in the circuit designed to color it. The MSH-1 is no longer in production.

The Frequency Responce Chart of the Panasonic Capsules he uses is allmost Totally Flat through the Whole Frequency Range....

Here is a Pic of the Frequency responce chart:

the Differance in Sounds in the 2 different Types of Mics are very Subtle, In Mics I have Built Based on his design It seems that the 1A version which uses a Single Transistor configuration has slightly higher Output and I think Lower Impedance so you can Run Longer cables without Signal Loss.....

MSHilarious: I think i found a Link to that Mic capsule I was talking about with the better SNR...The Capsule has a SNR of 66db but I think it uses an External Fet but I"m not sure....

That's a bigger capsule, so it probably is quieter. Could be a good candidate for my circuit, let me know if you try it.

I'm very interested in these mics at the moment as well. It's great to know that they are good for drum o/h, but I'm curious as to how they stand up as a vocal mic. The most likely uses I'll have for them would be vocal, drum o/h, and maybe a little accoustic guitar. Also, just out of curiosity, how do the mics fare in recording horns or wind instruments?

Going back to the vocals mentioned earlier, how would you compare the msh-1a's to an AT3035?

I thought they captured my narration very nicely. And they're small enough that you could put one next to the AT and decide which one sounds better after you track.
