I don't know how different the MSH-1 is from the MSH-2, but I just recorded some of the best drums I've ever recorded with the MSH-1 as a mono overhead. Getting a pair of these mics is the no-est of no-brainers.

Hey, CI2, can you post a clip?

I'll try and get one up this weekend. I'm switching web servers, so we'll see how that goes.

I'm jealous of APL

not because he uses B&K mics, but because he's got nicer studio furniture than I do. :(

I gotta explain to the wife that we need a new set of 'recorder stands'. :D

Well here's a clip of a test track I did for one of Jamie Holiday's new songs. I used a single MSH-2 into channel 7 of my Octane. The track was recorded in my control room. No eq or fx. I recorded it 24-bit at around -18dBFS, then normalized the clip to -6dBFS before converting to mp3.

And here's the cute little bugger you're hearing!

By itself, yeah. But the tune it goes with is upbeat and peppy!
Oh, right - that must have been me... :o

But the instrument is lovely, and most importantly (shifts back to thread topic), sounds great!

Sweet! Can I use that clip, or would I need artist permission?

I say use it. It was totally a test track anyway. I'll take full responsibility!

P.S. Did you check out the track I posted in the MSH-1 thread?

This mic, through my fave headphones, makes it sound like the squeezebox is in the room with me. I'm so impressed by the detailed aural image.

Well you are going to get more of that with an omni anyway, but I was impressed with how much "useable" room tone it captured, especially considering how (relatively) small my control room is. Your guitar clip sounds huge, and a lot of that is due to the space you recorded it in. Even the keys jangling sound present.

Main point - apl and MadAudio like these mics! :D

If you are looking for somethig new to take on as a project how about creating a budget version of the holophone mic

http://www.holophone.com/home.html

I've done a version with a remote capsule on an extended lead connected to a chassis-mount XLR. Five of those plus a mannequin head should work, although I'm not gonna do the head bit myself.

The next project I'm working is a mini clip-mounted version on an extended lead from the connector. Also I have a "tube simulation" circuit, and a submini tube circuitl. No plans right now to sell the tube circuit, it won't fit in an XLR. More of a DIY project.
