MS-16 30 to 15ips conversion (or vice versa)

Well, if you have experience with a 15ips machine you can tell just by looking at how fast the reels spin when in PLAY. There’s a big difference between 15 and 30ips. But if you can’t do that just play a 2500’ reel of tape. If it takes about 33 minutes to play the tape, it’s 15ips. If it take about 16.5 minutes it’s 30ips.

You can do the math if you don’t have a 2500’ reel of tape:

Tape length in feet x 12 = inches of tape

Inches of tape ➗ 15ips = seconds of play time

Seconds of play time ➗ 60 seconds = minutes of play time

So 2,500’ x 12 inches = 30,000 inches

30,000 inches ➗ 15ips = 2,000 seconds

2,000 seconds ➗ 60 seconds = 33.33 minutes play time at 15ips
 
Excelente, muchas gracias, yo creí que había alguna indicación impresa en la propia TASCAM MS-16 que indique cual es la velocidad original de IPS.

He comprobado que está a 15 ips.
Quisiera saber por qué es que permanece encendido este botón de SPEED en el control remoto AQ-65 y por qué el indicador del TIEMPO H: MIN: SEC: es mucho mas rápido. Muchas gracias. (El indicador está al final de la cinta).

I’m sorry I can’t tell from your picture what that LED indicator is, I don’t have an AQ-65 manual, and I’ve never used one. Hopefully somebody else can help. You may want to start a new thread.
 
hey folks, i’m very late with the update, but i finally finished the mod a week or so ago. (many other projects)

i recorded a full band last night, and it worked great. i haven’t touched any of the trim pots and i don’t think i will, because it sounds great. i don’t have a calibration tape, and the cost of admission is a little bit absurd to me (almost $500 from MRL). these tapes will stay in my studio, and most everything gets dumped into the DAW, anyway.

performing the mod was very time consuming. removing components and old solder, cleaning solder pads, etc was definitely the most labor intensive part of the process. worth it, though!
 
There is also a playback "Low Freq compensation" trimmer on the R/P cards recessed from the other trimmers.
 
To be clear, just so I do not mess anything up. In order to revert the channel cards back to 15 ips from 30 IPS, all you have to do is clip the 8 jumpers on the rp pcb? Then calibrate each card?

If you’re only changing the EQ then you’d probably have to change all the parts back to the old parts. If you just want to change the speed back to 30ips, and don’t care about calibration, then inside the tape machine you have to move the jumper (not clip) from M to H. See the first post in this thread. The change inside the machine, not on the cards, is what controls speed. The card changes are just for the EQ, that’s what your 16 channel PCB cards do.
