MR-8: Broken button, worth getting fixed?

Hey all...I made a quick search, as I'm sure this has come up, but didn't find anything.

After two years of heavy use, my trusty Red beast broke down last night. I went to press "Play/Record" and the Record button broke and went into the machine. I love the MR-8 for demos and for working on ideas, so I want to fix or replace it.

At $229 for a new MR-8, is it even worth getting fixed? I hate to take the thing into the shop and then pay a minimum service charge if I decline the estimate....not to mention I can simply order a new one without getting up off my duff :)

Just saw the MR-8 vs MR-98 mkII thread...I'm not seeing any big advantage for the extra $20 (I use an external preamp, so phantom isn't that big a deal). Anybody care for the wheel instead of the buttons (what...no "Record/Yes" combo?)

Thanks.

if you do get a new one and would like to sell the old one for parts let me know. that is as long as you do not want too much. LOL. good luck on what ever you do!

I'm inclined to buy the mkII, though I'm not really in the mood to spend any more money...looks like the regular MR-8s are listed as "Limited Quantity" so that tells me maybe I should spend the extra $20 if I do get a new one.

Roustabout - I'll let you know if I do decide to sell.

button problems

here is some info I got from the Fostex forum. I haven't tried it, I just saved the info in case I ever need it.

good luck

Here's all the information I have... They told me that the part number is 8526015000 and it cost $7.56 without shipping. They gave me this phone number (310.329.2960) to order the part. Good luck getting anyone to call you back, however. Getting this far was quite difficult because fostex DOES NOT like to reply. If you are one of the lucky ones they call back, don't just go by the item number, make sure you explain exactly what fostex model and exactly what play button assembly. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the info...I probably should have checked the Fostex forum, but I've never actually made my way over there. I worked as an electronics tech for 15 years, including a stint at a music store - I had considered trying to fix the MR-8 myself, but I it would probably take me six months to find the time...and a new one for $250. Surely it's an easy fix, though.

Same thing happened to me - it's an easy fix, took me about 20mins - you'll need to unscrew the back of the unit, remove the circuit board (another few screws) to get to the broken button.
