I haven't done one in a while, I see that they're up to 1.10,I think. I guess it's time. I think you unzip the file, put the file on the card and hold a key? I don't remember. Fostex out of stock on the cf, I guess they're selling them. do a search onthe forum on upgrade should work. I'll go look on my hard drive for the .pdf that explained it....

The MR8 has the driver in the firmware. It's compatible only with the new protocol of USB driver that doesn't need a disk. But unfortunately, that also makes it backwards incompatible with anything older than win2000, ME might work w/ it I don't know. So you would need a card reader to d/l data off the CF.
VERY good to know. Thanks.

Windows 98

Well, the Mr-8 does work with a card reader on Windows 98.It is really easy to do.The Fostex web site says that the MR-8 will not work with 98 at all,but will work with 98SE. I do not have 98SE.You all are right mixin down with a computer program such as, N-TRACK or Cakewalk make it really nice to do and does a good job!!! :D Thanx for all the info it is very much appreciated. Now gotta get a 512MB.

package

Someone was asking what the package that my 512mb cf card came in, since it's been working for me.... so here it is, I finally found it in the pile of junk....

I recently updated the firmware to v1.20 and then acquired the same SanDisk 512 MB card from Amazon as Junplugged (lowest cost that day). Everything works very well, and thanks to all who steered me here!

Fostex' instructions for updating the firmware are unnecessarily complex provided you have a card reader attached to your computer. This is the abbreviated sequence:

1. At the Fostex site--and with the 128 MB CF card which came with your MR-8 inserted into your computer's card reader--download the latest update (currently "mr8 Updatev.1.20") and save it to the folder called MR_8Card, which is already on the CF card.

2. When the download finishes, insert the CF card into the MR-8, press Hold STOP and turn on the MR-8.

3. You'll see: --version up--, etc. and the line, "Are you sure?" Hold down the REC button and push the "yes" button.

4. You should see the updated software version displayed during this process.

5. You'll see, "Version up Please Wait" then, "Completed."

6. Turn off the MR-8. Even if you're going to use it immediately, I'm guessing it needs to cycle off and on again to be ready.

Delkin devices...?

Delkin Devices
128MB 35.34
256MB 52.60
512MB 120.38
1GB 225.00

Are these on the list of approved CF cards?

If so, are these reasonable prices???

Fostex 512mb card

Just got my 512mb card from Fostex $99+shipping,still cheaper than any place I saw for a new card, they must have got a good deal from simpletech for ordering mass quantities because you cant get it from their site for that price.

well, that's a good deal. It sure has gotten easier now that Fostex is selling it. But now that I upgraded the CF, I'm not sure how much longer I can put up w/ the machine....

What happened with the CF upgrade that has shortened your patience???

Is the new upgrade undesirable? Can't you wipe it clean and "downgrade" to an earlier version?

CF upgrade is ok. I didn't yet upgrade the firmware tho. If I upgrade to v 1.2? in the rare case that I would need to downgrade, then the files from 1.2 won't be compat w/ prior v.

What's new with 1.2?

So what is new with 1.2? Anyone using it?

I haven't updated mine in a loooong time...

MR-8 firmware v. 1.20 supports a greater range of cards than previously possible. Be aware that there may be backward compatibility issues if exchanging files with another MR-8 with an older firware version. The new firmware also has a couple of other features, among them support for CF cards up to 2 GB (no take may last longer than 99 mins 59 secs, though), cleanup undo (saves memory - enabled by default), and probably other, minor changes. If installed in the manner stated on the Fostex website, it should work OK. It does so for me...

Well that would HUGELY suck, being as all of my recordings end up on my PC hard drive with the intentions of bouncing them back to the MR8 to add tracks, etc...

There could potentially be a compatibility issue with older tracks, using the 1.20 version...? If so, I guess I'll wait. I don't have the cash laying around for a 2 gig card, and my red beast is getting tired, her play button is nearly non-functioning these days...

Time to upgrade? I might be on the same boat as junplugged before long!
junplugged, let me know where your research leads you....

As good as my little MR8's been to me, they clearly were not designed with longevity in mind....

cellardwellar, the incompatibility is only an issue when transfering tracks recorded on a MR-8 running firmware v. 1.20 to a MR-8 running firmware 1.11 or earlier. The firmware version 1.20 has full backwards compatibility. I've tried that myself and old projects are easily loaded into the unit with the firmware upgraded. I suggest you get someone to look at that play-button... that one's hard to do without. I also suggest you get the upgrade anyway, even if you don't plan to use larger cards. It does solve space issues on the card when 'undoing' takes...

regards, Nils

Thanks Nils.

I will go ahead and upgrade in that case.

I don't know what I would do without the ability to record for the duration required to send my MR8 back though.... How many lost thoughts, how many forgotten bridges/misc. riffs/etc...?

Previos CF cards and 1.2 firmware update

Want to know from users with previouly not working cards with MR-8. Has the firmware upgrade allowed bouncing tracks without any problems? Want to see if previously failed cards are now working with the MR-8 upgrade. What is the minimum specs for the cards to allow for recording and bouncing without problems? What's the specs on the Fostex cards? 20x, 40x??

borinqueno

Hey Cellar, there's a lot of DAW's out there. Korg seems cool w/ the touch screen, saves on dead buttons problem. Roland seems harder to use. Tascam 24 track is big and bulky and lots of menus. I don't know, it'll take some time.

borinqueno, I had 2 cards that didn't bounce right. I didn't yet upgrde to the latest. And I don't know the specs that the MR8 requires, they don't state it anywhere, also, it's hard to even get the specs of any cards when shopping for them. If you got your card recently, then you can return it, getting authorization to return it based on incompatablity. I had to do that w/ my latest card.

I have a card now that works, see prior posts, I also posted the picture of the package.
