I'm thinking of getting a computer-based recording setup. Currently my studio is based around a aw2816. It seems that the digidesign 002 and motu/digital performer get a lot of press, but I can't really tell what the main differences are. Can anyone offer some comparisons? thanks.

I suggest you look at the software you'll be using first. I personally LOVE DP4 (been using since DP 2.7) since I'm a MIDI freak...great facilities for MIDI. Pro Tools for MIDI rather sucks. 
What you need, well...who knows.
I'd be figuring out what software interface you think you could live with...then I'd go to the forums for those particular software and figure out what people are using in terms of hardware setups...then figure out what hardware will suit your needs. An interface that you can live with for a year or three is a big decision.
