I've got $500 to spend on a new interface and I'm leaning toward the Motu 8pre. But I have some questions.

My pc is a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ based Windows Vista machine with 2 gig of ram

I use Sonar PE 6

I have a 1394 (firewire) input

I can mix up to 24 tracks on my setup before I start running into problems with my PCU usage. I can go higher track counts with less plugins and effects.

Now the questions:

Will I see any issues recording 8 tracks simultaneously (dropouts etc.) with this setup?

I currently us a M-Audio 192 Audiophile interface (PCI). Will I still be able to use it once I hook up a firewire interface? I'd like to do up to 10 tracks using both interfaces if I can (for drums) but don't know if that will be possible.

Is the 8Pre the right choice for around $500????

thanks in advance for any advice

Thanks. Hopefully someone can answer the question about using the M-Audio PCI interface at the same time as the 8Pre firewire interface.

the word on the street is that you can only use one Asio device at one time.

but i think i read somewhere that an asio4all driver could pull up multiple devices, I'm not 100% sure, and don't really have a need to try.
now you can use the adat feature from the motu for more i/o.
Is there a digital out on your other interface?

well that's all i know......maybe someone else can comment.

I run 896's and 8 pres on a computer similar to yours, x2 4400+

Thats way more than enough PC for recording bands and mixing. As above, running 2 asio units is a nono

Right now IMHO the 8pre is the best bang for the buck for most people. It is easily upgraded to 16 channels of recording with a el cheapo behringer ada8k.

There is no firewire unit with lower roundtrip latency than the motu line, and if you are able to use the older (3.6.7.4) drivers, its even lower still
