Hendrix had amazing skill. He's not my favorite guitarist, but hes pretty much the only person I've heard play that I was convinced he could make a guitar produce any sound he wanted it to.

I read an interview years ago by someone who recorded Hendrix....he said one thing that frustrated Hendrix more than anything, was that he coudn't play the sounds/music that he heard in his head...he could only come close.

IMO, there's not a rock guitarist alive (or dead) that hasn't been influenced by CHUCK BERRY and/or CARL PERKINS.

Yes but according to Keith "I fell out of a tree" Richards, Chuck copied all his stuff from the piano player that died last year.

I have some good remasters of early Chuck in which the piano is quite clear. Chuck did cop some of Johno Johnson's licks - he had a couple of his own too.

Who came first? Chuck Berry or Tbone Walker??? :)

You also forgot that (those) guy(s) from The Knack! He (they) were cool ... M-m-m-m-m-my Sharona ... I wuz influenced .. ok, so maybe it wuz just me ... big deal ... gotta go ... pizza's here

The most influential

This might already have been said, but honestly the MOST influential guitarist has to be Andre Segovia. Do your homework and you'll understand why.

Cheers, Rez

Not that it needed to be proved, or argued, but this is pretty good proof that Tremonti can shred. This song reportedly started as a jam session, but is now known as "Ahavo Rabo Taco Salad". It's an Alterbridge instrumental. He's not the best, but I like his style!

Actually, directly or indirectly Buddy Guy and Albert King influenced as many guitar players as just about anybody.

John Fahey, Frank Zappa, Buckethead, and of course Esteban.

there are many missing guitar players that are very influential and innovative early on that have paved the way for todays guitarists to be able to do the things that seem 'common' now. the list of great players would be too long to list

..of course esteban would the #1 on that list if it were ever created :)

I'd say Hendrix. but I voted for Page. I play in a heavy-rock band and in a death-metal band, Iommi rules too, You have to consider maybe Frusciante was influenced by Hendrix?.. Same thing with alot of modern influencers, they heve in turn been influenced by perhaps some of these four?..

Anyways, just read a book about zeppelin which also mentioned that both Page and Plant stole songs/riffs/lyrics from old bluesgeezers. They didn't seem to worry about it much eather..

jeff beck, clapton and page also seem to have played in same bands, so they might have influenced eachother..

I'd say Hendrix is the most distinctive of the lot. It is not usual that you recognise a player from his playing alone novadays?
Happened while listenenig Devin townsends latest, thet I spotted S.Vai playing a solo on his distinctive style...

Zappa also is distinctive, Page wasn't as distinctive as maybe bonham in drums, but had charisma..

...H-E-N-D-R-I-X...
...but what is really amazing here is the number of those who list Van Halen...without a Jeff Beck, there could be no Van Halen...Hendrix, Beck, Page and Clapton were the signature players of the 60's-70's...I know...I was a tour photographer with Hendrix and also with the Yardbirds (and their transformation into Led Zeppelin)...those guys wrote the book... ;)

The most influential guitarist in my line of music is Johhny Ramone.I play punk music if you didnt guess.

i agree. johnny ramone invented an entire genre of guitar playing. more of todays music is influenced by him than any of the geezers on the list. although i do think EVH embodies everything from technicality to melody. i also didnt see ace frehley mentioned anywhere. hes not technically great, but theres no doubt he inspired millions of people to pick up guitars.

Short list...

Man, that's a mighty short list for such a big claim. While it's true Page and Plant blatantly ripped off the classic blues guys, I would pick Page out of this bunch solely on his recording techniques and some of the sounds he got out of very few tracks. He's a good player, too. They all are, or were. Clapton especially went vanilla years ago. Even the Cream reunion was a disappointment. EVH I used to love, but these days I'm over it. Some that I would have put on the list:

Zappa, McLaughlin, Lifeson, Les Paul, Howard Roberts, and the list goes on forever...
