I can feel the negs coming before I even say this, but...

The basic message of this thread is "This forum isn't for those who want to learn, only for those who already know."

It's arrogant to be annoyed at someone simply because he/she is as ignorant as you were once. Unless, of course, you popped out of the womb knowing all this stuff. By the same token, no one knows it all. No matter who you are, your most sophosticated inquiry will sound redundant and stupid to someone else who learned the answer to your question years ago.

I disagree. It's not arrogant to be annoyed. It's arrogant to demean a poster with your response to a question. Huge difference.

One reason thoughtless questions should be discouraged is that they tend to, collectively, drive away those who are intelligent and experienced from a forum.

Better though, to politely suggest to a poster to restructure a question, or use the search, than to flame them. What THIS thread seems to be for is to vent without directly attacking someone. What's wrong with that?

Actually, threads like this can be quite interesting, and informative. If in fact people really let posts bother them, they need to read mx's post...but he's a red eyed booger eater, so he knows nothing.... :D

And you obviously didn't read my post, as it's just a bunch of stupid stuff that people have actually said, that is all lies. Yet they come in here to impress someone, and people try and help them, but they are offended when they are caught lying. That part can be annoying.

I never pick on someone for not knowing something, and very few people with knowledge here, pick on newbies. Most of us are here for fun, and hopefully to better ourselves at getting the music put to media.

And also read tone_aot's posts, as I think he figured out, you might take a bit of heat from a few people, but alls good, and you will probably find some really good answers, from very smart people here. We've all been in the position of not knowing what we are doing, and it's hard to ask the questions properly. Once you get hold of what you really want to ask, it goes pretty smoothly. Posting the "what's the best mic for under $100" right under 6 other posts that are EXACTLY the same, gets the question ignored, and then getting pissy about it, does not make friends. And that happens constantly. People need to keep their cool, and wait for answers.

And have some fun. That's what it's all about.

If that's the case, why isn't this thread called "most thoughtless question?" What makes a question thoughtless? That the person asking might have less background knowlege than the person making fun of him?

What's "fun" for a lot of people here is precisely to "pick on newbies."

How long have you been reading threads here? I see many more people helping newbies than picking on them.

What's a thoughtless question? Well I can give an example of what isn't...
I posted a question in an HVAC newsgroup about a heating system problem, asking for advice as to whether it had likely been diagnosed correctly by the service company, before the work was done. I took a few minutes to get the model number of the boiler in question, the exact name of the part that had malfunctioned, the technical term of the malfunctin that the repair tech and listed, the water pressure level of my home, and several other pertinent details. I got very helpful responses from a number of pro's, no flaming, learned that it had been in fact diagnosed right and also learned a lot about my heating system.

If I had just said, "My heating thingy isn't hot enough. How do I warm it up? Is my repair guy a crook?" That would have been a thoughtless, annoying question.

Few, and far between, my friend....It happens, but so do answers to the questions. And the answers are very plentiful here....

"yo ima nu thug rappa and i gotta get sum of ma beets inta mp3's. i gots 150 bucks tha i can borra from ma sista. wha should i get fo a pro sound. ight im out."

thats close to one i saw in the archives. i was quite astounded, especially that people responded and attempted to help him, and then he probably never looked at the site again, because he still only has one post.

dont get me wrong, im not much better, i just happen to have spent a little more money than he has. (and i passed 6th grade english class)

It's very fun, and healthy too.

Hey, sometimes masturbation gets old, and you need alternative passtimes.

Good point TragikRemix - and I think the way a newbie responds if they get criticized about their question makes a big difference also. When they come back with, "Yeah, sorry, my question wasn't very specific... what I really need to know is..." it can change the tone of a thread completely. Arrogant newbies seem to be the ones that get flamed. I've seen very little arrogance among the experienced forum members.

This forum's pretty good that way, in that it's self moderated and very effectively. Those spewing BS get called on it. Those being just plain mean are usually called on that also. This forum is really a very supportive place.

How can I soundproof my room cheap. I can only spend about ninety dollars on foam.

Actually it only gets annoying when after you answer it they still won't believe it because their buddy said that eggcrate foam would do the trick.

Or to put it another way the only TRULY annoying questioner is the one that won't accept the truth even after you've gone to the trouble of explaining it.

Yes. This is the only time I get a bit irritated.....20 people tell someone the answer to their problem, and they say "fuck off....I want another answer...."

if I turn the mic upside down, does it sound different?

Most annoying question candidate #2....

Hey, when you hit 100 posts, you can remake the forum in your image
Until then, I suggest you read a lot, observe, and tell me how you feel after wading through reams of it day after day after day, ESPECIALLY when you've just answered the same damn question several times in the last couple of days... (of course, all in different forums because most people just jump in and start asking without reading anything) :D

I can be annoying. :D

Wow, I had no idea this post would provoke so many responses. It was just a tedious day at work.

I wasn't trying to suggest that someone who had a question shouldn't post, I just felt that if the question had been answered 1000 times already, it showed laziness on the part of the poster for not doing their research. I presume that the reason why people post questions such as 'what mic under $100 dollars will make me sound like a recording superstar?' is that they don't realise the recording superstar's record label is spending INSANE amounts of money at high end studios where most likely the engineer's chair costs more than your average Chinese LDC. The newbies get sucked in by marketing from the 'consumer grade' equipment manufacturers saying they can get professional results without spending the money, so they plug their MXL2001 into their Ultragain 'PRO', hit record in a cracked copy of Cubase, and then wonder why it doesn't sound like a pro recording.

As to the rap vocal mic question, if there are any mic manufacturers lurking on this board, YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON AN UNTAPPED MARKET. All it would take is for ONE of the manufacturers to say they have designed a mic specifically to cope with the particular requirements of recording rap (I still have no idea what they could possibly be by the way), and then there would finally be a definitive answer.

By the way, I'm not dissing rap (I bought - rather than downloaded - Twista's last album and loved it). I just don't see why as a subgenre of popular music it has particular needs as far as recording.
