More Ribbon Mic Question

How do you like the SPL gold mike ? What is the cost of this animal ?

I bought it here:
http://www.thomann.de/index.html?partner_id=97926&page=gb/spl_goldmike_9844.htm

Goldmike is extremely cheap now because its producer SPL introduced a new model Goldmike II.

I am very satisfied with its sound. You can hear the influence of tube but still the sound is without obvious distorsions. Sound is airy and sweet.
With Flair function switched on it is extremely sweet and with a lot of heights so I am not using this switch.
As I wrote before my opinion is that it is a middle class preamp - definitely better than low cost tube preamps such as VTB1 (which I had before) and MIC 100 but still it is not a high end class.
I have home recording semi professional studio where Goldmike fits well to other gear.

So if you're looking for more gain, and your preamp is quieter than that (a semi-decent one should be), I'd just do a digital gain change.

I am satisfied with the gain I get from my preamp and ribbon. It is loud enough so no necessity for any improvements.

I was just on Thomann's site. Do you know what the cost is in USD ? I don't know the present rate of conversion.

I have a friend who had an oportunity to hear Goldmike 1, Goldmike 2, Great River, Manley, Siemens V276, DACS and maybe some other preamps.
Acc. to him the sound of Goldmikes is a lower league than the others.
So it looks that Goldmike 2 is overpriced (1000 EUR) but 385 EUR for Goldmike 1 is a good choice.

Yesterday I opened the Goldmike 1 from some reason and there are russian Sovtek 12AX7 LPS tubes.
Those tubes are also middle class like whole Golmike - not bad, not excellent, but good enough for general recording. They give a little brighter nice sound.

I guess it depends on what you call air sounds. Ribbon mics are sensitive to gusts of air. And should not be used for things like kick drums. Or even guitar amps, in close proximity anyway. Probably not that great for use outdoors either.

Gutar amps??? Not from what I keep reading-- Royer anyone?

But, for the sake of the OP, I wanted to quote your comment, because I am thinknig that this is probably what the poster was noticing. I put my then new ribbon away for a while b/c I couldn't take vocals with it. Why? Pops on the plosive consonants. Eventually I got around to coughing up $20 at the local GC and everything is fine.

MSH and Marik are talking about impedance and resistance and capacitance and reluctance and henries and every other -ance. That stuff mostly confuses me-- and I'm a one time engineering student. (Not EE, tho) All the toalk has me imagining a Naiant Ribbon...

For most newbie home recorders, a pre with a reasonably high impedance should get a 'decent' sound, right? My firepod is in the low thousands- two or three, and I'm happy enough.

I do think that some EQing I had to do on the Tenor Sax was due to frequency response changes that happen in ribbons when the pre impedance isn't high enough, but as far as noise, everything was cool.
