Ok, so heres the deal. I've ruled the mackies out, this is a home studio, im not making money, and im 18 years old. Anything i buy is 1000times better than what im using now, and maybe in like 5 years if im making money i will buy some nicer ones. I went into the local store (long and mcquade) and had a chat with the guy, looking at the stuff they had. They were getting the Event 20/20 BAS in for 670 Canadian each, and the Yorkville YSMIP for 370 each. Now he says the yorkville are really good, and for the price, they seem to be the speaker for me. Does anyone own the yorkville seT? or could they give me a comparison between them and the events?

I use the YSM-1i's as secondaries (which are the unpowered version of the YSM-1p's)... they're pretty good but no comparison to my primary KRK V8s..............

Bruce

I'm actually thinking the same. Are they getting them for you, or are they starting to order them from now on, at long and mcquade?

At that price I would look for a used pair of Yamaha NS10M's. People here like to knock them but there is reason they are still in use in practically every pro studio in the world. As I recall they were around $400 for a pair new.

Bruce is gonna go off on one again about this....

another vote for NS10's.
definitely.. great monitor to check out if the mix is working. saves a lot of time in my mixing sessions.

and definitely, id say a good 75-80% of serious studios have NS10's which surely says something.

i have them also because sometimes whenever another engineer comes to use my studio, chances are they're very famliiar with NS10's.saves them bringin their own pair.

hey

Yo sup priz, this is ambi from sidney just incase you didn't realize. Yea, i asked the guy at long and mcquade, i think his name was Steve, he said they had them, or were ordering them, and they also had the event 20/20 BAS on order. So they should be getting them in on a regular basis, its not an order for me, just, stock they're getting into the store. And yea, Priz, they said they have a Forum the first wednesday of every month at 6:30 at the store, where people come in and ask question about home recording, and setups, stuff like we're asking on here. I was gonna go out to it, you should as well. I'll hit you up on icq later and tell you more details.

Not at all! I can't stand those things, but NS-10s definitely work for some... and not others....

KRK V8s don't work for everyone either!

Bruce

yeah that's true. some people dont like NS10's. i dont really like mixing on them. but once i think ive finished, i playback through them to check.

wow, i was on prorec today. i might check out a pair of Dynaudio BM6A's. just read their thing on top ten nearfields.

KRK didin't come out that well in it for somereason, infact, bottom of the whole list. apparently harsh? im looking for some more nearfields soon, ill have a listen to quite a few of those monitors on the list.

ive heard a lot of good stuff about BM6A's though. it's about time i checked them out i think!

hmm

Well i guess i'll have to audition monitors and find out whats best for me. But my friend recently listened to a set of mackie hr824's , then a set of the yorkville ysmip and said he couldn't tell a difference. I guess unless you have trained ears it would be hard to tell, and of course, you have to learn your monitors and your room, etc... So im sure The Yorkvilles would be sufficient for me, the fact that they're 1/3'rd the price of the Mackies, or less, is also good...

I've heard the DynAudios - and I wasn't impressed at all... as a matter of fact, I disagree with almost all of Rowan's monitor reviews......

Monitor selection IS pretty subjective, after all............

Tannoy Reveals (passive, around 379.00/pr.) Can't comment on the rest, never heard them...just heard alot about them (Yorkville and Yamaha).

ham

well, ive been recomended by someone in the other hardware section. to take a sound level meter (decimeter?) to the store and audition them all at exactly the same level, so i can accuratly judge them all. Im going to have to do that when im closer to buying them. But the yorkvilles are my main choice right now, Is there only one version of the ysmi actives?

not impressed at all bruce?

im gonna go and check em out in the next 2 weeks or so and see what they're like.

tannoy reveals...hmm, i didin't like them. very shy in bottom end, it rolls off around 90hz i think. found it quite hard to mix bass drum/bass guitar with them.

yea

the guy at the store showed me a set of Tannoys, they were 1500 canadian, down from 2100, because they were scuffed up, and a clearance item. They had the tweeters inside of the cone, So he said you could mix for longer with out your ears getting fatuigued. Do you know which modle of the tannoys that could have been? they were pretty big, they stuck me as a bit larger than the other ones, but i could be wrong.

yeah, i know the ones. i think they're the system series. midfield speakers, yeah?

you might be intersted to read this if i can find it. a brit magazine did a lab test on KRK's, Dynaudio and 2 hifi speakers,B&W and Wharfdale. the B&W came out ontop of the KRK.better response. i know there are other factors, but i found it interesting to read.

ill dig up the link.

Cool Romesh... but I gotta tell ya, those KRK V8s REALLY work for me........ everything I need to hear is right there!

Once you find the right hammer, it doesn't matter if someone comes up with a better one or not! ;)

EMMV!!!
