My 1st and only monitors are the Behringer Truth 2031a's. Got em for $200.

yo bknot... I was in the same position as you not too long ago, trying to decide what monitors for around $200. After months of research I ended up going with the new model BX5's, the BX5a. They can be had brand new for $225 at fullcompass.com, with free shipping. I think they are great for the price. It really depends on what your doing though man. If you're mixing beats, then you will NEED a sub, or at least 8" monitors. It's a simple unfortunate fact and there is no escaping it, if you want your bass to be accurate. But, if you are just mixing your vocals over pre-made beats then you will be fine with 5" monitors and no sub, just dont fuck around with the beat .

But yeah, for around $200 get the BX5's or BX5a's.

I mix beats all the time without a sub. Anyone making professional mixes is mixing beats in the same session as a vocal. You cannot yeild a professional mix with vocals over a stereo mixdown of a beat.

I don't have 8" monitors, and I don't NEED a sub at all.

What people NEED to do, is learn their environment, learn their monitors, and understand how their mixes translate to other systems. It took me a few months to understand how my mixes would translate, but I can't even remember the last time I had to "test" a mix on another system to see if it was right. I know my monitors, and I know my mix is perfect when I hear it. There is no sub in the mix, and adding one would only create illusion.

If you really feel you NEED a sub, then I'd say your ears aren't working properly or your mixing environment is crap.

Also, I'm not speaking as someone who just mixes his own music... I get paid to mix and master for many other people... not saying that to try and impress anyone, but just to say I'm not "joe average home studio hobby guy"... if you feel me.

What's your opinion of the KRK Rokit series? I'm thinking of getting the 8's but I'm wondering if I should get the 6's instead. I'm just hoping that the 8's don't add too much bass to color the mix up unnecessarily.

Surprisingly, I don't use monitors at all. I mix through a pair of headphones that I've experimented with and learned really well so I know where they're dead on accurate and where they're dead wrong for the most part. All my speakers are with subs and I don't do mixing with subs.

I haven't heard them first hand, to be honest. I've read good things about them, but haven't had the opportunity to hear them yet.

If you're looking at active's, I'd also take a look at the Alesis M1's in that price range. I know the KRK RP-8's are over $600 for active's, and about half that for passive.

I've heard a few of the Yorkville monitors, and they are really great. I highly recommend them.

I have had the BX5's for about a year now.........I use those and a pair of homemade monitors that a tech school nerd kid made for me and they work perfect together. I get pretty accurate readings, with my ears anyway, and that's important. If you can get that consistent result, you have a pair of monitors that work for you. I don't really buy that "These are better than these"....I mean I do believe some monitors are more in depth, but how deep are you trying to go?

I think i will go with some 6" > speakers ..so I can get a decent bass out of them..

but its narrowed down to about 3..that I will try and peep this weekend..
