I just got to wait for my birthday to try out my new AKG 271's
With the mini XLR cable these use it's very easy to make replacement cables for them. A little bit of Canare mini Star Quad and some Neutrik (Switchcraft for the mini XLR end I believe) connectors makes for a nice upgrade.

I removed the switch from my phones which turns them off when not it use. That also took a bit of glare from the sound.

They have a pretty nasty sound to them when first plugged in. Give 'em some time to break in and the sound improves immensely.

Yeah, it's got large, color-coded dots to tell you which side is which (red=right, blue=left), and padding inside each headphone to smooth the midrange response somewhat. You can stuff the standard headphones yourself, using wadded up kleenex or cotton batting, but be careful working around the delicate wires inside. Plus, you can buy four Deluxe and the fifth one's free.

so.... the deluxe one isnt worth it?

Not really, if you're handy and not afraid to take stuff apart. But if you buy four Deluxe, you get one extra for free. And the Deluxe does look a bit cooler with the color dots.

It takes time to tear the headphones apart, insert the padding, reassemble the headphones and retest them; that's where the bulk of the extra cost goes.

On the down side, the wires inside most headphones are very fragile. If you're planning on modding them, be careful working around those wires. Only you can determine how much your time is worth.

Bottom line, the Standards sound very good with the mod, but you run the risk of trashing the wires inside.

If you want a nice set of 30 buck headphones, try the Sennheiser HD201's. They're not as rugged as the MoreMe's, but they sound very good. The MoreMe's are better for long term studio use, where lots of people might abuse them, but for occasional use in a home studio, the HD201's might work well for you.

How's that for a hard sell?

Just got the sennheisers and they sound great. These are mostly just for personal use and some friends so i think they might be better. Maybe if more people start using my equipment ill try the moremes. thats for the advice
